She explained, “My kids’ rent is due today, so we’re going to collect payment every week.

“They get £5 for household chores and we charge £1 for rent, £1 for food and £1 for utilities at the start of each month.

“Jordan paid his rent this month and as soon as the payment is made, we will mark it on the tracking sheet to confirm the payment in the folder.”

Milly said that before they spend the remaining £2, they ask their children whether they can afford the purchase, whether it is a “want or a need” and whether their future they would be happy with the purchase.

The mother explained: “This is to help them not spend emotionally on toys and sweets and to develop an understanding of how to spend their money to other categories, such as savings, expenses, etc., as this is something schools we don’t teach children, and we wanted our children to learn about expenses and accounts in a safe environment, and it worked amazingly for us.”

Milly has turned her children Stiffany, Jordan and Hannah into budget binders, which they use to track their expenses.

The binders have three labeled pockets, one for rent, one for food, and one for bills, and they put their money in the relevant binders.

Then, on the first of the month, Milly collects their money.

Children put the remaining £2 in a separate pocket for their savings.

His video accumulated 67,000 likes, but sparked debate in the comments.

Many people were unsure of the idea and said it was “ruining their childhood.”

One of them said: “will they be evicted if they don’t pay?”

A second added: “No, let kids be kids.”

A third commented: “I’m glad my parents didn’t do this.”

Another joked: “I would be saving up to move.”

However, some agreed with her that teaching children financial responsibility from a young age can help them later in life.

One person chimed in: “Am I the only one who thinks this is a good idea?”

Meanwhile, one shared: “This is what every parent should do.”

Should parents charge their children rent?

Sarah Bull, mother of two and fabulous senior digital reporter, weighed in on parents who charge their kids rent. She explained:

“Children are expensive! This is a fact, and anyone entering the world of parenthood will be aware.
“However, with the cost of living crisis hitting hard, it is becoming increasingly difficult for many people to care for their children in the current climate.
“So, some mothers and fathers started charging their children rent.
“I understand the concept. After all, it might be enough to cover a McDonald’s dinner for them or a trip to the pound shop.
“It also helps teach them about money and can improve their math skills.
“But it’s not something I plan on implementing for my children.
“In my opinion, kids should be kids. And since paying rent is something they may have to worry about in the future, I certainly don’t want them worrying about where their rent is coming from at this age.

While charging your children “rent” may seem extreme to some, others think it is fair if they are over 18.

According to The office For the 2021 National Statistics census, there are 4.9 million adult children still living at home with their parents in England and Wales.

A report of comparethemarket.com found that a surprising 74 percent of parents feel there isn’t enough information when it comes to knowing how much to charge their adult children for rent.

More than half or 55.1 percent of parents surveyed admitted asking their children to “pay to stay at home”.

However, two in five parents or 44.9 percent said they do not charge their adult children rent, letting them live at home for free with their mother all day, covering all their expenses.

A quarter of parents or 24 percent admitted that they cannot afford to pay their mortgage or rent, as well as bills, without their children paying the rent each month.

The research revealed that the average amount charged by parents across the UK is just £25.55 per week – which equates to £110.71 per month.

According to the research, on average, parents request £68 for mortgage or rent, £31 for bills and £33 for food, from each child, per month.

Despite what parents ask their children to contribute financially, more than half or 51 percent admitted they were unsure of how much they should actually charge.
