CHOOSING a name for your baby can be a complicated task, especially when you start considering other people’s opinions.

A mother was left “in tears” after sharing her name with her father and he said he thought it was “terrible”.

Taking to reddit, the mother shared her heartbreak and asked people how they would handle the situation.

She wrote: “I’m mainly looking for some support and am curious to hear from others who may have been through something similar.

“I’m 27 weeks pregnant and I had a very happy and sweet conversation on the phone with my dad last night.

“I mentioned that we have a new name we like for the baby and then I told him the name.”

The mother revealed that she plans to name her son Bennett if he is a boy and will use the nickname Ben.

However, things did not go well for his father.

The pregnant woman continued: “He immediately viscerally reacted negatively, saying ‘Oh God, this is horrible!’

“And then I said ‘Dad! We like it..’ and he continued in the same shocked and upset voice ‘that’s a terrible name, I’m sorry.’

“I immediately started crying.

“He tried to backtrack and apologized, saying it was up to us what we chose.

“But it felt like the moment had been ruined.

“I’m not sure if I’m just hormonal, but this interaction left my heart hurting more than I expected.”

She asked if other parents had ever experienced someone rejecting their name and how they dealt with it.

Mom said, “I know it doesn’t matter at the end of the day if we like the name, but Ouch.”

I named my baby after a wild dog – people openly torment me and the nurses at the hospital laughed, it really suits her

One person responded to her saying, “My dad reacted like this when we told him the name when he visited us in the hospital.

“I suggested a different name, even after I said the paperwork was all done and submitted, so there was no change anyway.

“I was very angry, but we talked and I told him that he named two children and his opinion in my son’s name counts less than nothing to me.

“He finally apologized.”

Are unique baby names worth it?

The Fabulous deputy editor reveals the turmoil she faced with her own name growing up.

When I was a kid, all I wanted was one of those personalized keychains with my name on it.

But no joy, the closest I could find was Rosie, Joseph (not very good for a girl) and Joanne.

Josie is short for Josephine, which is a French name, and I managed to reach my 20s without ever meeting anyone who shared it.

When I try to introduce myself to people, I get all sorts of random things – like Tracey and Stacey – which can be really annoying.

Although I’ve come into contact with a few Josies over the past year – there seem to be a few of us around my age – it’s still a much rarer name than most of my friends.

Overall I don’t mind it, at least it’s not rude or poorly written.

And that means I can get away with ‘doing a Cheryl’ and just referring to myself as Josie.

I’m getting married this year and some friends are shocked that I’m changing my surname, as it’s not seen as very cool or feminist to do so these days, but I explain to them that I’m not as attached to Griffiths as I always said’ hi, it’s Josie’ when calling a friend.

I think it’s good to be unique and I will definitely try to replicate that when naming my own children.

It’s the rude names you have to watch out for, so after nine years as a lifestyle journalist, I’ll definitely avoid them.

Another person added: “We do not share our name in any way.

“We don’t need opinions, if we like it we’re not changing because someone doesn’t like it.”

A third said: “Yes this happened to me and I’m sorry to admit I ended up changing the name.

“I really loved that particular name and one afternoon I told my mom and sister that my mom made a face and said ‘that’s disgusting.’ I was so surprised!

The pregnant mom responded: “Thank you for sharing this and I’m sorry you had a similar reaction, it helps to know we’re not the only ones.”
