A mum has sparked controversy after sharing a cheeky trick to get kids a free gift.

Like most retailers and stores, coffee giant Starbucks has also increased its prices to keep up with costs – but savvy mum Lauryn Clare recently revealed how to get the kids treats without spending anything.

Sharing the hack on Instagram, the foodie said: “If you can’t afford a Starbucks for two, order a cup for your child.

”It’s free and will make them as happy as a $5 prize [£3.80] cake pop’, Lauryn, 34, subtitles the clip now viral.

Increasingly popular, the so-called dog cup is an espresso-sized cup that contains a generous portion of whipped cream, which people can order for free to give to their dogs.

The mother, from Philadelphia, said she normally doesn’t buy anything from the coffee chain because she finds the prices “expensive,” but she still has some money left on her voucher.

According to the mother, she was in the car ordering a Starbucks drink when her son woke up from a nap and knew he would want something.

“I knew Addie would want something. So I asked, “Do you charge for puppy cups?

”And the woman who took my order said, ‘Oh, my God, no. What’s your dog’s name?’ Today.

Lauryn claimed the barista knew the dog cup wasn’t for a furry friend, but allegedly didn’t seem to care about the cheeky customer.

“She was totally fine with it,” Lauryn said.

Although the money-savvy mom was delighted with her trick, she has since received a huge backlash from people online, who have criticized her for taking advantage.

Amazing back to school deals you won’t want to miss!

”I was once told it was only for dogs!!!” shouted one user.

”This is refining the system. She is not a puppy”, another classified the mother for the controversial change.

“It also teaches dishonesty,” someone shamed Lauryn.

However, there were also many who didn’t mind the cheeky trick, with others chiming in with their own tricks to keep kids happy in cafes.

“My daughter thinks coffee shops sell fruit snacks because I give her a package from my purse when I get my drink,” one mom wrote.

”What they don’t know won’t hurt.”

Free summer vacation activities

You don’t need to spend a penny to keep your kids entertained this summer…

Museums – Some museums offer free entry to some exhibitions and also organize events for children.

Parks – Go to your local park to enjoy the playgrounds, game areas, courts and splash pads. Some even have trails for kids to enjoy.

Beach – It doesn’t need to be sunny to enjoy the beach, you can swim in natural pools, fish for crabs, build sand castles or stroll along the promontory.

Library – If the weather is bad, go indoors and borrow books, audiobooks, DVDs.

Cooking – Make your own mini cake or Come Dine With Me challenge.

Play dates – Invite friends for a convivial afternoon.

Board games – Enjoy a little sibling rivalry with rounds of Monopoly or stretch your brain with Scrabble.

”In this economy? We’re both going to get doggy cups,” she laughed for a second.

There was also a comment left by someone claiming to be a barista at the worldwide chain, saying that the team “doesn’t care” whether the dog cup is for a dog or a human.

“I know our prices are very expensive, and giving your child a treat that will make them happy shouldn’t be so controversial,” the person said.

”I guarantee it’s not a nuisance because it’s for a child and not a dog.”
