A mum’s attempt to have a glowing face for her 30th birthday left her looking “deformed” and with a “beak” – as her lips began to rot.

Nicole McManus decided to freshen up her face before her 30th birthday party in June by inserting 1ml of filler into her cheeks and lips.

The mother-of-two, who lives near Preston, Lancashire, has been using filler and anti-wrinkle injections for the last ten years without any problems.

However, weeks after her most recent appointment, Nicole noticed that her cheek began to swell.

Worried about an infection, the 30-year-old went back to her doctor, who advised her to go to hospital, where they told her Nicole cut part of her cheek.

Luckily, the swelling on Nicole’s face went down, but just two weeks later, her lips suddenly exploded – leaving the stay-at-home mum too embarrassed to leave the house.

Desperate, Nicole found another practitioner who was horrified by the state of her face and told her that her lips had entered necrosis – the death of tissue or cells in the body.

The mother has since had all the filler in her cheeks and lips dissolved, but feels it has been left “deformed and ruined” by her cosmetic procedures.

Nicole said: “I just wanted to do it to feel a little better about myself. Then it became an addiction. I would say I was addicted. You look at yourself and think I’m going to dig a little deeper.

“I have used this practitioner for over a year and there were no problems until June when everything started to go wrong.

“I wanted to glow for my 30th birthday, so I got my cheeks and lips done, but they both swelled up a few months later. I had to go to my 30th birthday with a swollen cheek.

“I went to Preston Royal Hospital because I was really worried and they thought it was an infection. They mentioned that they had to cut my cheek.

“Then two weeks later my lips started to swell on one side and I thought what the hell was going on. My lip filler moved up my face towards my eye socket.

“My lips were so swollen I could barely drink. I texted the nurse begging for help.

“I was in a lot of pain. It felt like I had been beaten. My lips were so swollen. I was so embarrassed to leave the house. My top lip looked like a beak.”

And Nicole said she was so horrified by her appearance on her 30th birthday that she refused to let anyone take photos of her.

Nicole said: “I didn’t want my picture taken. I didn’t take any that day.”

What are the risks of lip fillers?

THE RISKS of dermal fillers depend on whether the procedure was done correctly and the type of filler used.

The NHS recommends that you talk to your doctor about the risks beforehand.

Serious problems are rare but can include:

  • Infection
  • A lumpy appearance under the skin, which may need to be treated with surgery or medication
  • Filler moving away from the intended treatment area, which may need to be removed with surgery
  • Scars
  • Blocked blood vessels in the face, which can cause tissue death and permanent blindness

You should see your doctor if you have any complications that need medical attention, and speak to your doctor if you are not satisfied with the results or experience lumps.

After taking antibiotics, Nicole visited another doctor who told her that her lips were starting to “rot” due to an infection.

Nicole said: “She saved my lips. She told me that I could have lost my lips because of the onset of necrosis.

“This could have been fatal if it had turned into sepsis.

“I got deformed lips. They’re still bruised weeks later. I was bad, I hate talking to people because of the way my lips look. They look horrible.

“Think twice before getting fillers. I should have enjoyed my natural appearance. I regret what I did because I was left with that.”
