It can often feel like a huge task to have to clean your home – especially when you’ve run out of cleaning products.

To make your spring cleaning jobs easier and more economical, Nancy Emery, cleaning expert at Tap Warehouserounded up five items in your cupboard and fridge that can be used to eliminate spills, stains and dirt.

From tea bags to lemon juice, these items you already have in your cupboards can help make your home spotless again.

Cleaning your home doesn’t have to involve purchasing multiple cleaning products and using harsh chemicals on your surfaces. Instead, you can clean your home with items you have in your closet and refrigerator.

Here, Nancy Emery revealed cabinet staples that can be used to target problem areas in your kitchen.

Coffee on your counters

If you are an avid coffee drinker, you may want to think about reducing your intake from four to two cups a day.

This is because you can use instant coffee grounds to remove tough stains on your countertops.

Nancy says, “simply sprinkle a teaspoon of instant coffee powder into half a cup of hot, soapy water and use this solution to get rid of the stain.

“Coffee helps eliminate dirt due to its acidity, making it the perfect everyday item to help keep your home spotless.”

Tea bags in oven dishes

For all you tea drinkers, it’s not just coffee that you can use to remove tough stains, but tea bags are also a great natural product that can be used as part of your spring cleaning routine.

Nancy says: “To get rid of burnt stains and grime on ovenware and other non-electrical appliances, soak them in the sink overnight with a few tea bags and this should help bring back that beautiful shine that they had.”

Instead of breaking your nails and harshly scrubbing dishes and containers, the tannins in tea bags help to naturally degrease and loosen dirt from food.

Lemon on the taps and in the kettle

Many of us have heard about the benefits of using lemons for cleaning, but here are some tips for removing limescale from taps and eliminating stains.

Did you know you can also use lemons to descale your kettle?

Nancy says: “To get rid of limescale from taps, you will need to prepare a 75/25 solution of lemon juice and water.

“Simply use a soft sponge and gently rub the solution, leaving it under the tap to dissolve limescale deposits for 30 minutes. After the time has passed, rinse thoroughly with water.

“For specialty finishes such as brushed brass, matte black or chrome, it is especially important to avoid using harsh chemicals such as vinegar when cleaning.

“Lemons are quite acidic, so make sure you don’t let the lemon juice solution sit for more than two minutes.

“After rinsing with water, dry the taps with a microfiber cloth as this will help prevent limescale.

“You should also clean the aerator regularly, which is where you’ll likely see most of the limescale buildup.

“Use a toothbrush and your lemon juice solution to gently scrub.

“Did you know you can also use lemons to descale your kettle?

“Start by cutting a lemon in half and placing it in the kettle half to three-quarters full of water. Once boiled, let it rest for 10 minutes and then boil again.”

Tea bags are also a great natural product that can be used as part of your spring cleaning routine.

Mayonnaise on wooden furniture

A much lesser-known cleaning aid that can be found in the refrigerator is mayonnaise.

Not only does it work great on a sandwich, but it also works wonders for removing ring marks on wooden tables left on cups and glasses.

Nancy advises: “Squeeze a pea-sized amount of the condiment onto a piece of kitchen paper and place it on the stain.

“Apply a little pressure before leaving it on the stain for 20 minutes. After doing this, buff the area with a clean cloth.”

Copper ketchup

Not only is mayonnaise a great fridge cleaning staple, but so is ketchup. Use it to bring back and enhance your elegant copper cookware.

Nancy adds: “Apply the ketchup to a clean cloth and, using circular motions, rub the stained areas of your pots and pans.”

While this is a very effective method, you may want your rooms to smell like something other than ketchup.

For Nancy, citrus is the most beneficial aroma in her kitchen.

She adds: “Citrus is one of the best scents to use in the kitchen as it has invigorating properties, but it also has a strong enough scent to help mask unwanted cooking odors.”
