The lawn professional (@elitelawncare) shared gardening tips in a viral TikTok video.

After aerating the lawn, he explained that there may be a lot of clumps of dirt.

“What do you do when your grass looks like this after aerating?” he asked.

While he credited aeration as the “best thing you can do to have a great lawn,” he admitted that the result isn’t always so pretty.

Aeration helps break up compacted soil, which prevents the flow of essential elements that support grass growth.

The aeration process creates holes in the soil that allow air, water and other nutrients to reach the roots.

Without aeration, grass can thin out and even die completely.

He showed how the process left plugs of dirt in his yard, which can be tempting for lawn owners to clean up.

“You’re going to want to put them together, but I’m telling you, don’t put them together,” he advised.

He explained that the plugs themselves were one of the most beneficial parts of lawn aeration.

“Plugs are full of nutrients and microbes that you don’t want to lose,” he said.

“Removing them pretty much defeats the entire purpose of aeration.”

Lawn owners, he added, should wait while the plugs travel through the soil.

While they can be unsightly to look at, the expert explained that there was something homeowners could do to improve the aesthetics of their lawn.

Plugs are full of nutrients and microbes that you don’t want to lose.

Although all plugs should not be removed, some can be moved from high areas to low areas to “level” the lawn.

Over the course of a week or two, he added, the plugs will break down on their own and the lawn will return to normal.

Lawn care enthusiasts thanked him for the pro tip.

“Finally, some really sound and accurate advice,” said one commenter.

“Thanks. Finally someone knows what they’re talking about,” said another.
