Carol (@carolioder_78) gave viewers a look into the Amish lifestyle in a viral TikTok.

Her Amish brother and sister-in-law’s home, she explained, has no electricity.

Necessities, such as a lamp in the kitchen for lighting, were powered by gas.

She revealed that the couple relied exclusively on gas lamps throughout the house.

Instead of electricity, his Amish family used gas pipes running through the ceiling and carried lighters to light lamps.

Other important sources of energy, she added, are battery-powered devices, like a lamp in the living room, and renewable energy, like solar panels.

A long cable connected to the solar panel powered the hairdryer she used to dry her hair that morning.

Carol explained that the techniques were “luxuries” that she didn’t have as a child.

Instead of batteries or solar power, she relied on kerosene lamps for light.

As a teenager, she explained that she needed to get creative with her hairstyling techniques when she went through Rumspringa, a rite of passage and period of growth for Amish youth.

“As far as styling my hair… when I was in the Rumspringa phase, I would curl my hair,” she explained.

“I would take my curling iron and an oil lamp with a chimney and put my curling iron on top of the lamp so it would heat up.”

To keep the curling iron warm, she would place the tool back in the oil lamp.

Many still had a number of burning questions for Carol, despite finding her hair curling solution effective.

“How did you dry your hair while it was growing out? Curling it! Genius!” said one commenter.

While some were concerned about the amount of gas involved, others attested to the safety of the method.

“Wow, honey, I wouldn’t step foot there!” said a concerned spectator.

“I’m afraid of gas stoves, so imagine my anxiety in a fully powered gas house.”

“That seems safe,” joked another.

“We had a summer trailer in Maryland as a kid that had a refrigerator, lights, and stove that used propane gas to run,” said one pro-gas commenter.

“Heating too!”

She revealed that her family relied on gas and batteries to power their homes and devices.
