FROM beach days to museum visits, most people have seen a fossil at some point.
However, one man was shocked to find what appeared to be ancient remains on the stone slabs of his parents’ home.
In a virus publishReddit user Kidipadeli75 shared the circumstances surrounding the strange discovery.
He also included a photo of the bone, which he assumed was not from an animal.
The man, who works as a dentist, was able to use his experience to locate what appeared to be a human jaw in the hallway of the house.
“I look at cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) systems all day, which may be why I noticed this right away,” he said.
CBCT refers to medical imaging and X-rays of the mouth.
“My parents just renovated the house with travertine stone,” he explained.
While visiting, the original poster noticed the strange detail on the terrace’s threshold.
While joking about the remains being Jimmy Hoffa’s, he clarified that the stone’s original quarry is in Turkey.
He also revealed that his parents’ home is somewhere in Europe.
“We have been contacted by several researchers and are currently discussing how we can involve them,” he said.
Social media users speculated that the jaw, officially known as the mandible, came from a human.
However, the dentist highlighted that it could have originated from any hominid, the name given to a family of primates.
In addition to humans, the group includes orangutans, gorillas and chimpanzees.
The Redditor included a second photo of the jaw, placing a banana next to it to contextualize the size.
SURPRISED REACTIONS
Reddit users shared their various theories in the comments section.
“There is some precedence for this to happen. I searched for ‘bones in travertine tile’ and got multiple results for different specimens,” one person wrote.
“This seems like one of the more interesting pieces.”
“Dentist trained in forensic dentistry here: this is a hominid jaw, almost certainly human,” said another reader.
“Considering how quickly travertine forms, this jaw is probably around 200,000 years old, about the same time that modern humans evolved. This is fascinating,” wrote a third person.
Another Reddit user called the unusual discovery “literally jaw-dropping.”
“Imagine dying and ending up on someone’s kitchen floor,” joked one Redditor.
