This is why during the summer months you may find more creepy crawlies in your home.

Pest exterminator Georgios Likopoulos from Fantastic pest control revealed that ants are attracted to water, food and shelter.

And once they have all three, “they start reproducing.”

He encourages homeowners to clean up any spills or leftover food immediately, as “it doesn’t take much to attract ants.”

Georgios also revealed that homeowners won’t have to break the bank when using different products or tricks to get rid of ants.

He also believes that people affected by ants do not need to use harsh chemicals to get rid of ants.

Georgios starts by recommending boric acid, which comes in powder form and can be bought on eBay for £4.49, to repel incoming ants.

But if boric acid is a little difficult to find, Georgios also suggested chalk, as it can help to disrupt the ants’ trail after it has been eliminated.

Keep It Clean: How to Stop Pests Taking Over This Summer

He also recommends coffee grounds, which can keep sugar ants away if used outdoors near the front or back door, and as chalk.

If you have pets at home, Georgios believes talcum powder is a safe method and can also be used around children.

This can be purchased for just £1.25 from the Online Pound Store.

Other pest repellent expert suggestions are to use scents that repel ants, which include lemon, white vinegar, orange, peppermint and black pepper.

Do this by mixing the scents with water and spraying near areas of the house where ants can enter.

This includes the front and back door and windows,

He also warns people not to offer them food and to ensure their home is clean and tidy.

And make sure there are no cracks near doors and windows, as Georgios recommends filling them.

Keep pests away all summer long

Wasps and hornets – hate the smell of peppermint oil, so spraying it liberally on your patio or porch can help keep them away.

Moths – Acidic household white vinegar is effective in deterring moths. Soak some kitchen paper in vinegar and leave it in the closet as a deterrent.

Flying ants – herbs and spices such as cinnamon, mint, chili pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cloves or garlic act as deterrents.

Mosquitoes – Plants, herbs and essential oil fragrances can help deter mosses inside and out. Try eucalyptus, lavender, and lemongrass.
