APPRENTICE star and West Ham United vice-chairman Karren Brady answers your career questions.
Here she gives advice to a reader who has been diagnosed with autism.
Q. I work for a finance company in a fairly junior role, despite being in my 40s.
My job has stressful moments, but luckily I don’t have to work long hours.
I earn enough to live, although, with two children, I don’t have any money left for luxuries.
However, it seems like all my colleagues – especially the younger ones – are constantly looking for the next challenge or promotion, and my manager is always asking me what areas I want to improve in.
She recently made some comments about not being very comfortable in a role, and I’m worried that my apparent lack of ambition could mean I lose my job.
Do you have any advice?
Catarina, by email
A. It sounds like you have a good work-life balance, so try not to compare yourself to your colleagues.
As we progress in our professional lives, our priorities change and younger team members may have a different focus than you.
If you’re worried about your lack of ambition affecting your work, talk honestly with your manager.
Address their comments about not feeling very comfortable in your role and express your satisfaction and enjoyment with your current workload and responsibilities.
Be aware that while being content is good, you don’t want to fall behind.
The way we work is changing with technological advances, AI tools, etc., so make sure you receive training to stay up to date and incorporate these tools into your work when necessary.
Remember that everyone’s career is unique and that prioritizing happiness and work-life balance is also important.
