An interior designer has revealed budget-friendly tricks that can transform the look of a home of any size.
She said the right paint color can instantly make a home look more expensive, but be cautious when selecting furniture.
Sophie Clemson is director and co-founder of The living housean online interior design company.
In conversation with The US Sun, she shared tips for a luxurious home without breaking the bank.
DELICIOUS DECORATION
Clemson said interior designers use paint and artwork to improve the appearance of homes.
However, these are not the only cost-effective tricks for a quick upgrade.
“When you’re updating a room, one of the first steps should be to organize,” she said.
“You’ll see how much space you’ll have to work with, especially if you’re making changes to the layout.
“Less is more, don’t feel like you need to overcrowd a space, a carefully selected room will feel more elevated and well designed.
“Painting is a great way to transform an environment.
“It will instantly change the feel of a room and can be affordable when you’re on a budget.
“Consider where you might use one paint color in multiple rooms, this will cut down on any waste and also create a flow throughout your home.
“As interior designers, we always recommend using black in a design scheme to make it look more expensive.
“Black can help anchor the space and bring contrast, especially within a neutral room.
“To make your home look more expensive on a budget, opt for large pieces of art to make a statement.
“You can find large, affordable prints online at places like Desenio and Etsy.”
FABULOUS FURNITURE
Clemson said strategically placing furniture and decorations can help make a room feel more spacious.
“Move furniture away from the walls, like couches,” she said.
“Move the sofas closer to the center of the room, this will give you more space around the furniture.
When it comes to rugs, you always want to go big, even in smaller rooms.

“When everything is lined up against the wall, it can look like a doctor’s waiting room and leave an empty space in the middle, which can make the room look smaller.
“Opt for a large rug and a large ceiling lamp.
“These two elements will make the space feel larger, just because your space is small doesn’t mean the rug and lighting have to be.
“Choose a rug large enough to fit under the two front legs of the sofa.
“This will zone the space and give the illusion that the room is larger.
“When it comes to rugs, you always want something big, even in smaller rooms.
“If the rug is too small, it will look like it is floating in the middle of the room.
“You want the rug to anchor the space and bring the room together for a well-designed look.
“The same goes for a large ceiling light: it will draw your eyes upward, making the room feel more spacious.”
