On a Reddit publishMary Gagliardi, aka Dr. Laundry, recalled one of the “weirdest stains” she ever encountered.

The laundry professional works at Clorox, where she originally worked in research and development.

Combining this experience with her degree in textiles, she now focuses on answering people’s laundry questions online.

One of these suggestions stuck with the specialist throughout her years in the sector.

“A woman was told by the dry cleaner that the stains on the shoulders and collar of her clothes were caused by exposure to gases and were permanent,” she explained.

She remembered the writer’s original disbelief at the information before learning of the serious risk.

“[She] I was surprised to learn that there really is such a thing as smoke fading,” said the expert.

Smoke fading refers to the change in color of textiles when exposed to certain air pollutants.

Laundry revealed that the dry cleaner was right about the origin of the stains.

“Given that the stains only appeared on the parts of the clothes that would have been exposed to closet air, it was quite likely,” she wrote.

The expert gave her professional opinion, but she went far beyond caring for clothes.

“I suggested she check her oven,” Dr. Laundry explained in her post.

“Of course, she had a bigger problem than smoke fading, her furnace was actually faulty.

“She had a gas leak in her house.”

Laundry recalled how relieved the woman was to have detected the problem early.

What is smoke disappearance?

The experts in International Institute of Dry Cleaning and Laundry broke down the science behind smoke fading.

Also known as gas bleaching, the problem develops when “air comes into contact with heated surfaces and forms nitrogen oxide gases.”

“These gases then react with certain dyes, usually those found in acetate and nylon, and cause them to change color,” said the professionals.

Smoke fading usually occurs on both sides of the fabric and often causes blue fabrics to turn red.

“She was so grateful that she thanked me repeatedly for saving her life,” she said.

The expert described the interaction as the best advice she has ever given.

“Wow, I’m glad she didn’t completely ignore them,” wrote one Reddit user.

Other signs of a gas leak may include a rotten egg smell, hissing or whistling noises, a cloud of fog, bubbles in the water, and dead houseplants.

If you suspect a gas leak in your home, evacuate immediately and call 911.
