I run a 9 figure business but men assume I know nothing and even say I look ‘inappropriate’ to be a leader, it’s maddening

A WOMAN business leader has revealed what it really takes to survive in the business world as a woman.

Jordan Brompton, 35, released Myenergi in 2016 and has since become the fastest growing renewable energy technology company in the world, but it hasn’t always been easy.

She and her business partner Lee invented the Zappi charger, the world’s first solar charger for electric vehicles capable of using 100% renewable energy.

Jordan, who recently appeared on the podcast Working hard, hardly working discussed some of the difficulties she faced as a co-founder of the company.

“It’s different when you’re a female leader, it’s still a bit of a boys’ club,” she said.

Jordan also revealed that she was almost kicked out of her own company: “I was almost bullied by her own business, in the sense
I thought this was too much, I just don’t have it in me.”

Despite winning Entrepreneur of the Year in 2022 and leading a nine-figure business to success, she still faces negative stereotypes as a founder.

Despite not enjoying his academic years as a student, Jordan, who lived a hundred lives before running Myenergi, gained a multitude of experiences to get where he is.

She said: “I just wasn’t academic, I tried really hard but I just couldn’t do it.”

Jordan added that her childhood in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, meant it would be almost impossible for her to go to university as it was from a working-class background where many didn’t assume higher education was for them, Jordan explained.

Jordan has always been interested in business and spent her youth trying out all kinds of roles, including hairdressing, dance instructor and bartending, while traveling the world.

After meeting her partner, she decided to move back to the UK and get a management job, where she met her now co-founder, Lee.

Although they were apart for a while working on different business ventures, Lee knocked on Jordan’s door in 2016 asking if she would like to go into business together and she jumped at the opportunity.

The duo then worked overtime to get their product known to electricians and others who work with solar panels and it was a huge success.

After a YouTube account called Fully Charged did an entire episode about its electric vehicle charger sales soared.

The company soon gained traction and sales increased by 200% each year, allowing them to expand the number of employees from four to over 35.

But it didn’t happen without problems.

Jordan talked about how some employees feel they can talk to her differently compared to her co-founder Lee, based on gender.

She recalled one of her employees making derogatory comments about the image used on the website while she appeared feminine.

“I remember him telling me, ‘I think you should change your profile picture because I don’t think it’s very appropriate, that’s what we want to portray’ and I thought, how dare you?

“He would never say that to his boss, people say things when you are a woman.”

Despite being viewed differently for being a woman in business, Jordan vows to never change who she is or become a “tougher” boss to earn their respect, choosing to create a healthy, open relationship with her team.
