On a Reddit publishMary Gagliardi, also known as Dr. Laundry, explained the most common reason for fabric deterioration.

The laundry professional trained in textiles before working at Clorox.

She started in the research and development department and now focuses on answering people’s laundry questions online.

When asked about one of the most common misconceptions she debunks, Dr. Laundry revealed an impressive answer.

“I think the biggest one is about the myth that prolonged bleach use damages fabrics,” she said.

Dr. Laundry explained that most materials inevitably begin to decompose over time.

“Many people don’t realize that cotton fabrics naturally deteriorate just through use, washing and drying,” she said.

“Using bleach also does not accelerate this effect.”

The expert analyzed the research behind tissue deterioration and the causes of it.

“We looked at this extensively, evaluating a wide variety of commonly bleached white items: socks, underwear, t-shirts, towels, sheets, dress shirts and even baseball pants,” she said.

The experiment involved washing and drying each item 50 times and comparing them before and after.

They also added bleach to half of the washed items to examine the differences.

“We found no significant difference in fabric resistance between items washed with detergent alone and those washed with detergent and liquid bleach,” she revealed.

Dr. Laundry joked that everyone has the same reaction when she shares this rumor.

“When I share this with people, they are really impressed, especially if they actually believe the myth!”

Tip for removing yellow sweat stains

Yellow spots underarms affect everyone, whether people admit it or not. But there is help available. To remove yellow stains from clothes, experts recommend the following methods:

  • Baking soda paste: Professionals in The Laundry Café I recommend mixing a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide with a tablespoon of salt and ½ cup of baking soda. Apply directly to the stain with a toothbrush, scrub and let the mixture sit for at least an hour and then wash as normal.
  • Oxygen Bleach: This method is equally useful for removing yellow stains. Mix one part oxygen bleach with one part ammonia in a non-metallic bowl. Wear gloves during this application. Rub it into the fabric with a toothbrush and let the solution sit for at least ten minutes before washing normally.
  • Stain remover or detergent: Stains on collars can be difficult to remove, like underarm stains. Therefore, pre-treat the area using a stain remover or solvent-based detergent. Apply the product to the collar with a toothbrush and let it sit for at least ten minutes before washing.

“Undiluted bleach applied directly to fabric is not recommended,” she added.

“It should always be diluted first according to the instructions, when used as directed you can actually do 50 cycles!”
