A LAWN OWNER has defended the anti-lawn movement.

He tried to explain to his wife that he got the best results from letting it grow freely in a hands-free environment.

Editor CondorOneFiveSeven shared the lawn tip in a viral post.

He explained that although his lawn and gardening maintenance has never been amazing, he has seen progress after regular maintenance.

“The lawns have never been ‘good’ since we moved them, lots of dandelions, violets, ivy and clover,” he said.

“But I keep the cut; it’s nice and green, with no bare patches, and that’s all I really care about.”

His wife, however, is worried about “the weeds taking over.”

“She’s mentioned it before, but lately it’s been more and more frequent,” he said.

“I feel like a lot of this has to do with our education. I grew up with a huge yard and we never worried about weeds and things like that.

“My dad kept it mowed, and that’s about it. Her parents’ much smaller yard is an immaculate carpet of grass. They tend to it regularly and recently had it all removed down to the ground and reseeded.”

His wife wants to give her lawn the same treatment, but the Redditor worries about the money it will cost.

Letting your lawn grow wild, he said, also has benefits that money can’t define.

My 4-step plan will help fix an uneven lawn – it’s easy to follow and perfect for beginners, a common garden tool is key

“Plus, we have a young son, and I feel like a big part of being a kid is exploring the yard, finding cool plants and bugs, picking flowers, and not worrying about chemicals or keeping the lawn spotless,” he said.

“I like the natural and random landscape. We found a wild strawberry last year and it was a super fun discovery!

“We have crane flies, bees and a million fireflies during the summer – it’s AMAZING to watch them at night.”

His wife, unfortunately, does not share the same point of view.

What is the ‘anti-lawn’ movement?

According to Homes and Gardens, although the anti-lawn movement has been around for decades, it has only recently gained momentum, in part due to social media.

“The anti-lawn movement centers on allowing wild nature to take over once again, encouraging wildlife to settle in backyards and boosting the local ecosystem,” explained H&G writer Chiana Dickson.

“A step beyond the simple wildlife garden ideasThe anti-lawn movement moves away from traditional gardening and toward free growth, with occasional mowing and tidying to ensure the yard doesn’t become too wild and untamed.

The movement’s popularity is largely due to growing concerns about water in the United States.

“‘As the population of the western U.S. grows, the water management challenge will only get worse,” said Robb Baumann, co-founder of True Leaf Market.

“The end result is that large, green lawns consume a significant amount of the scarce water available.

“Large, open lawns are simply not the most sustainable or affordable choice anymore.”

“Unfortunately, my wife does not share my enthusiasm. She is not interested in bugs or wildflowers and would rather keep up with the Joneses,” he said.

“She talked about ‘what the neighbors think’ and the value of the property.

While the grass is always greener on the other side, what matters most at the end of the day is their relationship.

“I now know that communication is key here. I love and respect my wife and I feel that to do communicate well,” he said.

“Until now, she has grudgingly accepted my opinion that this was not only unnecessary, but also expensive and dangerous.

“But I don’t want her to be continually disappointed; I wish she would come to appreciate the natural state of our lawn and see it as I do.

“Maybe this is self-centered of me, but I just want her to be happy without it hurting our finances and health.”

People advised him to give him a little time to recover.

“If you find fireflies in her area, wait until June so she can see them and be mesmerized,” said one commenter.

“It amazes me that all my neighbors have immaculate lawns while they mourn the loss of fireflies in our area.

“If not, maybe try to get to the root of her problem; what is her fear? Make a list of pros and cons, maybe compromise by planting natives and turning her lawn into a garden.”
