WHEN it comes to saving a few pennies on laundry day, it’s best to take the advice of a professional.

Following his tips will help you do more loads for less.

Editor Sally Starling shared how they learned about the laundry trick.

“A washing machine repairman once told me that the vast majority of problems they see are due to people using the recommended amount of detergent, which is actually too much,” they said.

“He suggested trying half the amount and seeing if your clothes still come out clean,” they added.

Of course, for coarser clothes, you can adjust the quantity if necessary.

Even so, they were convinced that using half was still more than enough to clean up.

In addition to saving money on detergent, this will also help preserve your clothes, according to Swash.

The detergent brand explained that over time, detergent buildup can make clothes look “dirty” or even faded.

This is because too much can leave behind an invisible layer of film that traps dirt and hard minerals from the water.

There was also one product in particular that the Redditor believed to be the ultimate “non-budget” choice – pods.

This is because these items do not allow you to modify the values.

“Use less powder or liquid detergent and then you can use exactly how much – or rather, how little – you want,” they said.

Now that they’ve learned how to cut costs, they also shared another pro tip.

“My favorite time saver is when you take your socks off, fold them when you throw them in the laundry basket,” they said.

“This way, a pair will always be picked up together when you pick up a load to put in the machine,” they continued.

All you have to do is sort the socks before throwing them in the machine.

They explained how this will speed up the sorting process when they are ready to leave, as partners “will always be on the same load.”

Other Redditors shared their methods for using less detergent.

“I use a dedicated tablespoon to measure my laundry detergent. Small to medium loads get one scoop, and very large loads get two,” said one user.

“A box of laundry detergent lasts a long time when you actually measure it and leaves your clothes clean without wasting soap,” they added.

Yet another Redditor completely eliminated another laundry item.

“I stopped using fabric softener years ago. I think everything is fine without it and I agree that it is better for your health. I prefer it without perfume too”, said the commentator.

Tip for removing yellow sweat stains

Yellow spots underarms affect everyone, whether people admit it or not. But there is help available. To remove yellow stains from clothes, experts recommend the following methods:

  • Baking soda paste: Professionals in The Laundry Café I recommend mixing a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide with a tablespoon of salt and ½ cup of baking soda. Apply directly to the stain with a toothbrush, scrub and let the mixture sit for at least an hour and then wash as normal.
  • Oxygen Bleach: This method is equally useful for removing yellow stains. Mix one part oxygen bleach with one part ammonia in a non-metallic bowl. Wear gloves during this application. Rub it into the fabric with a toothbrush and let the solution sit for at least ten minutes before washing normally.
  • Stain remover or detergent: Stains on collars can be difficult to remove, like underarm stains. Therefore, pre-treat the area using a stain remover or solvent-based detergent. Apply the product to the collar with a toothbrush and let it sit for at least ten minutes before washing.
