I live in a small 100 year old house – clutter builds up quickly, I’m a bit sloppy so it’s easy to destroy my house

A small business owner shared his unconventional living experience.

While there are many pros, like living in the neighborhood of your dreams, there are also many cons.

Editor atomic_cow shared their detailed tiny house lifestyle in a viral post.

Their 100-year-old tiny home is 400 square feet and sits on a raised foundation amid other tiny homes.

“We have lived here for two years. Our lot is about 2,100 square feet and we have a detached 1-car garage, a covered patio that we turned into a catio, a garage and a small backyard,” they said.

The tiny house includes a bedroom, a bathroom, a living room and a kitchen for a couple, two cats and two dogs.

“I love having a house, where I am I’m lucky enough to get into my beautiful neighborhood for the price I paid. I’ve always dreamed of having a tiny house, so our house was an amazing find for us!” they said.

“In my mind, my ideal home was a tiny house and a converted shipping container that was turned into office space. That’s basically what I achieved with my house, just in a different way.”

The first year of living in the house presented them with some difficulties, such as the lack of temperature control.

“It was extremely cold in the winter, it felt 10 degrees colder than outside. In the summer it was hot. The windows were leaking a lot of air, so fixing that helped a lot,” they said.

“There is no air conditioning or central heating, so we use window AC and electric heaters.”

Other negative points included not being able to organize parties or receive many people due to the small space.

I was fed up of living like a poor man so I put my house on wheels and went off the grid – now I have no bills and couldn’t be happier

“When people arrive, even having two more people in there is too much for our room,” they said.

“Someone has to sit on the floor or get a chair. When people stay at the house, you share the entire house with them as there is only one bathroom.

“It’s really not a good home to receive people. You need to use the space wisely for everything.”

The Redditor added that they need to be conservative with their appliances and mindful of the space they have.

I like being limited in what I can own because personally I used to save a lot of things I didn’t need.

“We don’t have a dishwasher because we need that space for potty and cat storage. When dishes are drying, they take up the stove area, so don’t cook for a while after washing dishes,” they said.

“It’s very easy to mess things up, as a pile of locks on the floor is a lot in a small house. I’m not a minimalist, and I’ll be honest, I’m a bit of a slob, so it’s easy to destroy my house just by living a normal life.

“During Corona, it started to get old quickly working from home in just 400 square feet, being stuck inside and not going out much. It was giving me cabin fever. Plus, the garage wasn’t set up for work, so at first summer was 91 [degrees] out there while I worked from home – it wasn’t fun.

“There’s also no room for any gym equipment at home, so you’ll want to have a gym membership if you want a gym.”

While space efficiency can be a challenge, the Redditor added that their tiny home has provided them with other happiness.

“I can plant a front garden, I can drill holes in things, I can make improvements that make a difference,” they said.

“I love where I live, I can walk through nature, see other beautiful houses, make friends with my neighbors, walk to the restaurants in the center of my city.

“I don’t need much more space. Our house is cute on the outside. I don’t see a need for more space than what we have now. In fact, I need to eliminate a few more things from my life.”

They also admitted that having to be mindful of space also helps them limit purchases.

“I like being limited in what I can own, because personally I used to save a lot of things I didn’t need,” they said.

“Now, when I buy something, I get what I really want, which has a space reserved for it.

“With furniture, I hope to find exactly what I need and only get what actually fits in the space we have. I have less stuff now, but I love everything I own.”

The Redditor added that he got creative with his partner to create additional workspace.

“We have a detached garage that we use as an office and that makes it work for us since my husband and I are gamers and need space for two desks,” they said.

“It has a sofa for the consul’s old games, two huge tables, washer and dryer, a sink, our corner bar, a large work/storage bench.

“If we didn’t have a garage, I would have to put desks in the living room, and that would eliminate my couch in there.”

They even managed to make their home cozy for their family of four.

“We also have a nice lot with a catio that is great for hanging out in the summer. I love the catio! Cats too,” they said.

“Fewer bugs and I can still enjoy the breeze and the birds. We also have a shed for things like old paint, camping equipment, Christmas decorations. Having this is important to me as I like to pack cute things for the holidays. “
