However, after a year of neglect, our barbies might be a little dirty and in need of a good scrub.

Fortunately, home and garden furniture experts, VonHaus I’ve shared a list of cheap hacks that will make your barbecue shine in no time.

The onion trick

A simple trick to cleaning your barbecue is to use an onion.

Liam Glennon, senior outdoor leisure buyer at VonHaus, said: “Slightly increase the temperature and place half an onion on a fork to create a makeshift handle.

“Gently rub over the hot grill so that the onion water naturally seeps through the grill – its antibacterial properties will remove any impurities.

“What’s more, unlike many chemical-laden cleaning products, it’s safe for food preparation. At 12 hours per hour, cleaning hacks don’t come much faster than that.

Bath your barbecue in beer

In addition to being a great accompaniment to a hot dog or hamburger, beets can also help clean up your barbecue.

Its natural acidity helps eliminate fat and its charring dislodges food particles.

All you need to do is warm up your Barbie to a medium temperature and pour a can of beer over the grates.

Leave it to act for a few minutes, before scrubbing with a brush.

You can use any brand of beer, so opt for the cheapest ones and save the nicer drinks for your guests.

Sodium bicarbonate

Another cheap trick to make your barbecue look like new is to use baking soda.

Mix it with a little water to make a paste and then apply it to the grill grates with a brush or sponge.

Leave it on for a few minutes and then rub and watch your barbecue shine.

How to Save Money on Summer Essentials

Sunnier days and warmer weather will leave many of us wanting to equip our gardens and outdoor areas.

Sun Savers editor Lana Clements explains how to get lots of summer essentials…

It’s worth knowing how to score big savings on hot tubs, wading pools, egg chairs and outdoor bars.

Many retailers run flash sales on entire ranges – often this is related to payday at the end of the month or holiday weekends.

Sign up for your favorite brands’ email lists and you’ll be the first to know about special offers. It may also be worth following retailers on social media.

Keep an eye out for special buys at Aldi and halfway through Lidl, which happen a few times a week and usually mean big-ticket seasonal items like beach gear and wading pools.

If you’re not in a rush to buy an item, try adding it to your shopping cart and leaving it for a few days.

Sometimes big brands try to entice you into the sale by offering you a discount.

Always check if you can receive cashback before paying. It’s especially worth using sites like Topcashback, Quidco and Jamdoughnut app when buying larger items like garden furniture as you’ll get a good reward.

Laminated paper

Aluminum foil can be a great help for hard-to-reach areas of the barbecue.

Crumple a leaf into a ball and use it to scrub areas that would be difficult to reach with a brush.

The sheet’s abrasive texture helps loosen dirt and grime, while its flexibility allows it to conform to the contours of your grill.
