A HANDY homeowner shared how they transformed their backyard with a DIY paver patio.

Although they were proud of their hard work, people criticized their eye for interior design and the “unusual” shape of their backyard.

Editor Government SurveillanceBird shared their home transformation in a viral post.

They explained that they accepted the project after negotiating with their wife.

“I wanted a deck and my wife wanted a flagstone, so we compromised and chose the hardest of the three: a paver patio,” they said.

The 400-square-foot development took a month and a half.

“The maximum [the time] was spent trying to add dirt and level/level the base,” they explained.

“I’m glad we did it ourselves, but I’ll definitely never do it again. It’s not professional level, but it looks good to us!”

Progress photos revealed the full extent of the couple’s work, including leveling dirt, measuring and finishing the tiles.

Critics felt that while the DIY project turned out beautifully, the shape of the patio was a little questionable.

“It looks good, but I admit I don’t understand the format,” said one commenter.

The owner explained that they made an unconventional interior design decision, going against the grain.

“I like how the shape isn’t a boring square or rectangle and it’s so unique,” ​​they said.

“We wanted to do something different than just a big square without having to cut anything out. It looks a little funny in the photos.”

They explained that they set aside parts of the patio for a fire pit, chairs, and an area to bathe their dogs.

The shape, they added, also offered additional benefits.

“[It] opens up a multitude of landscaping opportunities,” they said.

While the unique layout might be off-putting to some, they explained that it only mattered that it worked for them.

“[The] resale value may suffer a little, but if it’s a long-term home, [I’d] be okay with it,” they said.

Some helpful spectators offered ways to signal that the courtyard’s shape was made on purpose.

“I would put some plants/gardens/shrubs in these cut-out areas to help it look more intentional,” said one commenter.

“Otherwise, you’ll probably wish you had made a big rectangle.

“You can just wash the dogs in a corner—you don’t need a separate piece sticking out.”
