BED can be kept longer between washes by adopting three tricks, says an expert.
He shared unmissable tips for a comfortable and healthy night’s sleep.
Gareth Coxall is the creative director of the UK-based homewares company Terrys.
In conversation with The US Sun, he shared how to clean bedding and signals that it’s time to buy new sheets.
CLEAN AND COZY
Coxall said bedding should be washed at least once a week.
This is especially important because hot weather increases sweating at night.
However, several factors may mean that once a week is not enough.
“You may need to wash your bedding even more frequently if you have a pet that sleeps in bed with you,” Coxall said.
“If you have asthma or allergies that make you more sensitive to dust or pollen.
“If you usually eat in bed or if your children regularly sleep in your bed with you.
“In these cases, you should absolutely wash your sheets more than once a week.”
REMAINING ROUTINE
Coxall said bedding can be kept longer between washes if pets are kept off the bed.
He also recommended taking a shower before bed and limiting potential debris from coming into contact with the bed, “which means no more eating in bed.”
“These simple changes will instantly improve the cleanliness of your bed, helping to keep it a pleasant sleeping environment,” he said.
Coxall said washing sheets regularly reduces exposure to bacteria and allergen buildup.
If your bedding has pilling (small balls of rough fabric) and signs of thinning or fading, it is likely past its prime and in need of replacement.

“Although not a major immediate health risk, sleeping with dirty bedding can trigger eczema or contact dermatitis,” he said.
“Those with conditions such as asthma or other allergies such as hayfever can improve their overall well-being simply by cleaning their bedding regularly.”
RINSE AND REPEAT
Coxall said the bedding can last up to three years before showing any signs of wear.
He recommended replacing if there is any stacking, signs of thinning or fading.
He gave advice on how to wash sheets without damaging the fabric.
“You typically don’t need to wash your bedding with harsh chemicals if you clean it regularly,” he said.
“If you think you need a deep clean, use a stain remover in conjunction with your usual cleaning product and increase the temperature.
“Use a whitening powder if it’s a completely white set.
“A conditioner will help keep it soft – but remember not all are appropriate for sensitive skin.”
