Justin White is a contractor, garage renovation/installation specialist, and vice president of marketing for Overhead doors.

Speaking to The US Sun, he shared tricks of the trade for keeping homes from looking outdated.

DATED PROJECTS

White said homes can look dated before you walk through the door if basic maintenance isn’t kept up.

“Peeling paint or uneven caulking around windows screams ‘fixer superior,’” he said.

“But even small updates, like a new coat of paint, go a long way toward changing perceptions.”

He said that once inside, stained carpets and “worn-out appliances” like refrigerators could also be aging.

He recommended updating lighting as a “cheap and easy” way to make homes more stylish.

“Replace basic bulbs with warm-toned LEDs and add extra bulbs and fixtures,” he said.

ANTIQUE ORNAMENTS

White recommended decluttering to make a home appear more expensive.

“Cleaning out unused trinkets allows the prettiest pieces you have to shine,” he said.

“Furniture placement is also important – leave footpaths clear and position seats near windows if possible.

The crown molding draws the eye upward to create the illusion of height.

“Hanging storage, such as ladder closets in the attic, also maximizes functionality.”

He said decorating with lighter colors on upper walls can help make small rooms feel airier.

“I also love how the crown molding draws the eye upward to create the illusion of height,” he said.

ANCIENT TREASURES

White said thrift stores and consignments are “your friends” when shopping for furniture on a tight budget.

He advised incorporating plants, even if they’re fake, for a brighter space.

“With an afternoon and a little effort, used items are given a whole new life at a fraction of retail prices,” he said.

“Accessing accessories like throws, art, and plants is an affordable way to bring different spaces together into a cohesive look.”
