WITH this summer predicted to be a bust, we’re likely to see even more slugs and snails in our gardens this year.
One gardening whiz shared his DIY method for stopping these pests — and it’s completely chemical-free, too.
Even better, this hack uses items that are probably gathering dust in your garden shed.
If you are not following Gary Pilarchik on social media, you can check out his extremely helpful YouTube channel.
Better known as Estate with rusty gardenThis green-fingered influencer has been sharing her gardening tips and tricks for over a decade.
But more recently, this content creator went viral for his easy way to remove slugs and snails from your garden.
Instead of letting these pests take over his vegetable garden, Gary will use two terracotta pots to trap them. (Yes, it’s as simple as it sounds.)
As the gardener explained in his now-viral video, you just need to install this in a damp, shady spot and these pests will ‘just show up’ in no time.
Once you’ve found the perfect spot, all you need to do is place a small terracotta pot upside down on flat ground – leaving the small hole in the bottom facing up.
The gardening guru will then add a larger terracotta pot on top, again with the hole at the bottom facing up so slugs and snails can get in.
Leave this overnight and you will find both terracotta pots covered in unwanted pests, just like Gary did.
Showing how effective this was in a now-viral video, he told fans: “The key to this is they’re crawling… they’re looking for a cool, damp place.”
You can even increase the effectiveness of this DIY trap by adding a small amount of damp soil to the inner pot – as this helps maintain a cool, moist environment for the slugs.
Once you have captured your slugs, you can decide whether you want to “keep, relocate, or remove” them from your garden.
Needless to say, the DIY hack was a huge hit among her followers and over 6,000 people have watched the video so far.
In the comments, fans raved about the video and wrote: “So useful! I’ve been waiting for a video like this!”
Another added: “Thank you so much for sharing this information and for the close-ups of these pests.”
If you are tempted to try this, you can try this method using potted plants that you have at home.
However, you can also buy extra terracotta pots at most garden centers and big discount stores for just a few pounds.
B&M even has little terracotta pots for just £1.99just in time for summer.
Well, you might not be able to guarantee warmer weather, but you will definitely be able to deter pests with this trick.
Keep pests away all summer long
Wasps and hornets – hate the smell of peppermint oil, so spraying it liberally on your patio or porch can help keep them away.
Moths – Acidic household white vinegar is effective in deterring moths. Soak some kitchen paper in vinegar and leave it in the closet as a deterrent.
Flying ants – herbs and spices such as cinnamon, mint, chili pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cloves or garlic act as deterrents.
Mosquitoes – Plants, herbs and essential oil fragrances can help deter mosses inside and out. Try eucalyptus, lavender, and lemongrass.
