AN interior designer has shared 10 common design mistakes that make your home look cheap.
Viviane Albrecht revealed the kind of closet that makes your home look dated and the kind of artwork you should stay away from.
Taking to YouTube, she said, “You might be a little offended, but I feel like it’s my duty to tell you these things and how to fix them.”
80s cabinets
Vivien revealed that 80s-style cabinets make her home look cheap and outdated.
She added that they look underwhelming and very ugly.
If you’re unable to replace the cabinets, Vivien suggested giving them a coat of paint to liven them up.
Decorating with words
“Some of you may disagree with this, but to me, any item with cursive does not belong in a well-decorated home,” she said.
Vivien said the “worst offenders” include signs that say “live, laugh, love” or “home sweet home”.
She said if you remove these items, your home will instantly look better.
Strong lighting
Vivien said that bright lighting really devalues the appearance of the house and only belongs in the garage.
She said the main reason this type of lighting looks bad is because it is unflattering and reminds people of places like GP waiting rooms.
“If you have that kind of lighting, get rid of it,” she said.
Builder Level Lights
Having construction-grade lights in your home makes it feel like you can’t be bothered, Vivien said.
She said spending time looking for more interesting light fixtures will make your home look much more expensive.
Copies of famous works of art
Vivien advised against purchasing mass-produced copies of famous works of art such as Mona Lisa.
“It looks tacky and makes it seem like it’s the only piece of art you know,” she said.
The Most Popular Colors of 2024 for Interior Design

Homebase has revealed the official trend colors for this year.
To predict the top shades of 2024, Homebase sales data analyzed 5 colors that have grown in popularity among customers.
Copper, pink and black are predicted to be the hottest colors on Brit walls this year, while bathrooms are seeing a surprising rise in terracotta color schemes.
The five most popular colors for 2024 are:
- Copper (+57%)
- Pink (+38%)
- Black (+34%)
- Green (+29%)
- Orange (+27%)
Copper has replaced rose gold, while blush is the new magnolia, and the British are also daring by applying black paint to all the walls.
Green is always a popular color, but the shade ‘Fresh Herb’ – a versatile green in light gray tones – is making its way into hundreds of customers’ baskets.
Meanwhile, terracotta is taking over with ‘Frosted Papaya’, a peachy orange shade dominating bathrooms.
She said it’s better to find more unique pieces by lesser-known artists.
Thin Curtain Panels
Vivien said thin curtain panels cheapen the look of your home.
“Just put an extra panel on each side of the curtains and sew them together,” she said.
“This is going to get a lot better.”
Contact paper on countertops
Despite seeing the allure of using contact paper on countertops, Vivien said it will look really bad if it starts to peel or bubble.
“I prefer to look at a dated surface,” she said.
She said painting the counters is the best solution.
Incompatible kitchen utensils
Vivien said mismatched plates, cutlery and mugs “don’t look good”.
“Do yourself a favor and spend £20 at Ikea on a matching set,” she said.
Flat pillows
The interior designer said that flat pillows make it look like you live in a cheap hostel or hotel.
“Buy a new pillow, it will make your room so much better,” she said.
Disorder
Vivien said if you keep “dusty trinkets” your home will look cheap.
“If it no longer serves a purpose, it has to disappear.
“Your house will be much better.”
