Lance Millet, product care specialist at Raging Bull clothing brand, gave important tips for keeping your bedding impeccable.
Millet said when it comes to bedding, temperature is the first step.
“You should never wash your bedding at a temperature higher than 86°F as this can cause the fabric to shrink,” he said.
“Ideally, linen shirts should be washed on the gentle cycle of the washing machine or by hand in warm water.
“Many people don’t realize that linen is resistant to bacteria because it doesn’t retain moisture.
“This means it doesn’t tend to pick up odors and therefore doesn’t need to be washed at a high temperature to be completely clean.”
SOFT REMINDER
Millet added tips for cleaning clothes the right way.
“Linen shirts should always be ironed inside out and at a medium temperature, to avoid unintentional damage,” he stated.
“Linen is notoriously known for creasing easily, so an important tip is to iron the garment while it is slightly damp or use a jet of water or steam to eliminate creases.”
Millet offered advice on how to eliminate stains on lightweight fabric.
“Linen shirts often come in light colors or white, which means the slightest mark or stain can be quite obvious,” he said.
“If you spill anything on your linen, immediately remove the excess and gently blot the fabric with a clean cloth dipped in white wine vinegar.
“Then, wash the clothing in cold water to prevent the stain from setting.”
He noticed a laundry staple to avoid.
“Always avoid any cleaning product that contains bleach, as it can damage the fabric.”
PROPER STORAGE
Keeping your bedding clean doesn’t stop at the laundry room, according to experts.
Storing sheets properly is essential to prolonging the useful life of these pieces.
“Between uses — and seasons — be sure to store your bedding properly to preserve the quality and longevity of the piece,” he said.
“Your shirt should be clean and completely dry to avoid mold or odor.
“Before the first wear of the season, refresh the shirt by airing it out or gently washing it.”
Tip for removing yellow sweat stains
Yellow spots underarms affect everyone, whether people admit it or not. But there is help available. To remove yellow stains from clothes, experts recommend the following methods:
- Baking soda paste: Professionals in The Laundry Café I recommend mixing a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide with a tablespoon of salt and ½ cup of baking soda. Apply directly to the stain with a toothbrush, scrub and let the mixture sit for at least an hour and then wash as normal.
- Oxygen Bleach: This method is equally useful for removing yellow stains. Mix one part oxygen bleach with one part ammonia in a non-metallic bowl. Wear gloves during this application. Rub it into the fabric with a toothbrush and let the solution sit for at least ten minutes before washing normally.
- Stain remover or detergent: Stains on collars can be difficult to remove, like underarm stains. Therefore, pre-treat the area using a stain remover or solvent-based detergent. Apply the product to the collar with a toothbrush and let it sit for at least ten minutes before washing.
