On a Reddit publishuser RAthrowaway98989 explained how her mother-in-law has been pressuring her to change her son’s name.

The woman revealed that she and her husband have three children, two girls and a boy.

His three-year-old son was named after his grandfather and, at the time, there were no objections from his mother-in-law.

However, when it became clear that she would have no other grandchildren, the older woman asked her daughter-in-law to change her name.

“My husband’s family has this tradition where the firstborn son receives the ‘family name’ and passes it on to the firstborn son,” she explained.

“It turns out that my husband is not the firstborn, he has two older brothers.”

The Reddit user explained that the older brother already has the last name, but doesn’t want to have children.

His other brother-in-law only had girls, which means the original poster’s son is the only boy in the younger generation.

“My mother-in-law brought up the idea of changing my son’s name,” she revealed.

Although the older woman was already over the limit, the couple could not believe her reasoning.

I got my baby’s ears pierced at 3 MONTHS and I have strict rules – if you don’t meet my children in the first six months of their life, you never will, even for family

“My mother-in-law said she doesn’t feel the same love for my son as she does for our daughters because he doesn’t have a last name,” said the Redditor.

“I asked her how she could say that and my mother-in-law said it was because her eldest son failed her and my son was the only grandson she had.”

Although the woman did not reveal the family’s name, she described it as “really bad.”

She added that her older brother-in-law even changed his name when he became an adult.

We put our foot down and told her that if she didn’t stop, she wouldn’t be allowed to see any of our children.

The poster also explained that her mother-in-law was trying to convince her husband’s middle brother to have more children in an effort to keep the name alive.

Both couples set boundaries with the older woman because of the situation.

“We put our foot down and told her that if she didn’t stop, she wouldn’t be allowed to see any of our children.

Reddit users shared their thoughts on the grandmother’s behavior in the comments section.

“Your mother-in-law seems crazy. How she thinks this is a rational suggestion is beyond me,” wrote one reader.

“I would tell her that she won’t be around any of you until she stops loving her son ‘less’ because of his name.”

“Not only admit to loving your child less, but demand you change the name of a THREE YEAR OLD?!” asked someone else.

“Would I be angry if she demanded that you exchange a child who was three months old, but years old? Absolutely not. I would be left with very little contact, if not, no contact at all.”

“The only person allowed to suggest changing a three-year-old’s name is the three-year-old in question,” a third commenter pointed out.

“Honestly, this kind of mentality doesn’t make sense to me. Is your son family? Yes. So his name by default is a family name,” said another Redditor.
