EVERY mother wants the perfect name for her child, and some opt for unusual spellings or nicknames that belong to loved ones.
A mum has revealed a stranger laughed in her face over her son’s name – and they even encouraged her to change it.
Although friends and family may offer their opinionmother of three Amanda was surprised by this random interaction.
In fact, the Australian mom was so shocked that she even took to TikTok and recalled what her day was like when it happened.
The mummy influencer told fans: “Has anyone ever laughed at your baby’s name?
Because that’s what happened to me today in the stores, which is a shame.”
To make matters even worse, the busy mom decided to get something to eat when this happened.
After spending a lot of time browsing the stores with her young son, the content creator stopped for some sushi before heading home.
She was enjoying her food in silence when an old man approached her and liked the little one, before asking what his name was.
Upon hearing the baby’s name was Knoxie, the elderly stranger burst into laughter – leaving Amanda devastated.
“I understand it’s a unique name, but this man laughed in my face and said, ‘It’s not too late to change that. You should change that.’”
To which, the TikTok star responded: “No, his name is Knoxie and he will remain Knoxie.”
As her video quickly went viral, it became clear that she wasn’t the only one receiving unwanted opinions.
Countless mothers complained in the comments, some of them having extremely rude strangers tell them why their child’s name was “wrong.”
A mother revealed her son’s swimming instructor objected to his unusual name, telling others: “We took my son to his first swimming lesson, the instructor said what’s his name? The husband responded that the Navy instructor replied ‘What’s his sister’s name, Army?’
Another admitted: “My oldest son’s name is Oxley and I still get strange looks and comments whenever I tell them.
“Sometimes I don’t understand people.”
Even less unusual names were judged, with a third writing: “An old lady said your poor thing to my son Freddy.”
As another defended baby Amanda’s name, one Tiktok user came up with the perfect response for the elderly man.
“Should have asked him what his name is and then said ‘too bad your mom didn’t change yours’,” argued a fourth.
However, the influencer isn’t the only mother criticized for her unusual baby name.
In fact, one woman broke the Internet with her two-year-old son’s surname – and only 32 other children share it in the UK.
Well, what is a name, anyway?
Banned baby names
Although the UK doesn’t have many rules about baby names, some have been banned.
It’s important to note that parents can largely choose whatever name they want, but authorities will intervene if they believe the nickname could harm the child.
Names containing obscenities, misleading numerals and titles may also be rejected by the Registrar.
Here are some that didn’t make the cut:
- Cyanide
- Martian
- Monkey
- Akuma (meaning devil)
- Chow Tow (meaning smelly head)
- On its own
