Brittany Tharp (@brittanytharpinteriores) has been gaining more and more followers on Instagram, where she shares home tips.

She is also the founder of Brittany Tharp Interiorsa company that offers design consultancy.

The interior designer went viral on social media when she shared a little-known tip.

“The two most common mistakes I see in most people’s homes are rugs that are too small and artwork hung too high,” Brittany said.

“Ideally, you want to hang your art so that the center of the piece is 2 feet above the floor finish.”

She showed artwork and mirrors hanging on the walls of her home to demonstrate.

In the caption of the video, she revealed that the hack is based on “ergonomic and functional” design.

“Most people can comfortably see art mounted at this height, but any higher and you have to tilt your head to see it (neck strain),” she said.

Nearly 8,000 people liked the video and many commenters praised the hack.

“Thank you for that!!!” one person said.

“I’ve been struggling to figure out how to hang a bunch of related pieces of different sizes and layouts on my staircase. It’s working great!!!”

“One of my pet peeves!! The art was really high!” another wrote.

“I always say the most common mistakes are that I see art hung too high and curtains too low,” said a third.

“Great point about the rugs too. Probably because large rugs can get really expensive!

“Very useful. Thank you,” commented a fourth.

“Museum curator here, if anyone wants to know the height at which we hang works of art, it is 54 in relation to the center of the piece,” said a fifth.

“I learned the height from the museum, but 60” is much more comfortable for home!” another added.

“Unfortunately my boyfriend doesn’t expect me to take care of the decorations, so we have everything everywhere [laughing].”

Budget-Friendly Interior Design Tips

Interior designer Judy Hoang shared her furniture tips with The US Sun.

  • Save furniture and paint it to match your decor.
  • Test whether an item is suitable for your purpose before saving it.
  • Shop for rugs, lamps, tables and pillows at Target or HomeGoods.
  • Invest in classic and timeless pieces.
  • Set up smart home lighting to save money.

Brittany responded to a commenter who was curious if the hack could be applied to 10-foot ceilings.

“Great question and I may need to answer it with a roll, but I’ll try to be brief,” she said.

“Generally yes, but with the caveat that if you have higher ceilings, you should use larger-scale art, which will help fill the vertical space.

“But the 60” guideline is because that’s a comfortable viewing height (although it still won’t look weird on the wall) — that won’t change no matter how high your ceiling is.

“You’ll probably get a few inches taller with higher ceilings, but I wouldn’t go higher than 65” unless you’re being very intentional about doing so (like you’re trying to fill a double-volume space or something).
