A FRUSTRATED tiny home owner has shared his experience with a popular composting toilet brand.

Although it was the “Rolls-Royce” of composting toilets, they were not impressed.

Editor Bandits in the night opened up about dumping a toilet in a viral TikTok post.

They explained that although alternative housing had become “trendy,” the issue of a good bathroom still remained.

“With these unconventional lifestyles comes an old and conventional problem: what do we do with our shit?” they asked.

“Enter: Nature’s Head composting toilet. The creme-de-la-creme of composting houses, the Rolls Royce, the gold standard.

“All the YouTubers and bloggers of off-grid living, family farming, tiny house living, RV living and van living love to extol its benefits and firmly insist that it is not at all disgusting and that everyone who suggests such a thing is being a dramatic poseur .”

Unfortunately for them, they discovered the harsh and smelly way the YouTubers covered up a very important fact.

The Redditor explained that Nature’s Head claimed their bathrooms would eliminate odors for a completely smell-free experience.

“Separating urine from solids is key to odorlessness. When working properly, it will have a slight earthy smell,” the brand said in its FAQ section.

“In the normal user guide, it insists that all urine has an odor and you should only smell that smell when emptying the urine component, and that a musty smell coming from the solids bin is normal,” the Redditor added.

They felt the two claims were conflicting, however.

“Call me crazy, but… ‘musty’ and ‘earthy’ are not the same as ‘ODORLESS’ as many YouTubers, bloggers and Nature’s Head himself try to claim,” they said.

“I’ve been using Nature’s Head for a month now while we live full time in our RV with our 2 kids. It is situated in our absolutely tiny bathroom and we installed additional ventilation in the bathroom to constantly circulate air.

“It’s certainly not odorless. It doesn’t smell like fresh shit, which I appreciate, but the ‘musty’ and ‘earthy’ smell is STRONG and dominates the bathroom.

“I’m so scared by the smell that I have the fans running day and night (solar and battery power) and spend as little time as possible in the bathroom.

“I brush my teeth, apply makeup, do my hair outside the bathroom because I can’t stand being there with that musty, musty smell like a bucket of shit.”

Despite their best attempts to keep the stench under control, they explained that there wasn’t much they could do.

“I clean my head several times a day, but we can’t use vinegar because the whole bathroom is full of vinegar AND smells like mold.

“I use a spray with hydrogen peroxide and biodegradable soap that I apply when the trapdoor is closed and clean. I discard the cleaning wipes in the trash.

“I’ve now come to associate the herbal scent of the soap with the ‘poo bucket,’ so I’ve had to stop using that particular soap everywhere else in the trailer and in real life.”

Even worse, they explained that they spend much of their time trying to deal with the horrible stench.

“While I’m certainly not the most hardcore girl on the field, I’m also not that picky. I used to spend days and weeks in the country camping for work and was quite happy to shit in a hole in the ground,” they said.

“But when I’m in a house I share with my family, I just want my bathroom to smell clean, and I want everyone to stop pretending that ‘musty’ is a neutral smell that isn’t unpleasant.

“Also, can we stop glamorizing pissing into a plastic jug? I find this terribly vile and the presence of the boss in my bathroom just makes me not even want to go in there.

“So you have to dump 2 liters of urine somewhere that YouTubers love to cover up.

“This is such a vile task that you honestly couldn’t even pay me to do it.”

An experienced RV owner shared his bathroom advice.

They advised the distressed Redditor to avoid toilet composting altogether.

“Okay, so using anything other than a flush toilet is incredibly gross, especially if you grew up like so many did, using flush toilets. The alternatives are horrible, especially if there is heavy traffic,” they said.
