Ingrown hairs come out and smooth skin comes in.
A five-step method will help you get out of a sticky situation—literally—and just in time for summer.
Editor Krissycole87 shared her tips for improving your bikini area.
“Ingrown hairs are caused by two things: bacteria getting into the pores and hairs being unable to get back through the skin,” she said.
HYGIENE
The first step to shaving more efficiently involves cleaning.
“Sanitize everything that is about to come into contact with your skin before shaving or waxing,” she said.

“I actually place the epilator head in a shallow dish of rubbing alcohol and let it spin. Additionally, I run my razor through rubbing alcohol.”
She noted that she never forgets to sanitize her glove with Dial antibacterial soap.
Remember: if it gets on your skin, it needs to be cleaned.
“Anything that touches your skin needs to be cleaned, including your hands,” she said.
EXFOLIATE
The Redditor emphasized that there is one thing you should never forget to do before waxing.
“Exfoliate before shaving or waxing,” she advised.
She explained how she always exfoliates in the shower with Cerave Salicylic Acid Cleanser.
Currently on sale for $11.50 on Amazon, Cerave Salicylic Acid Cleanser acts as a chemical exfoliant.
The discovery is considered less “harsh” than traditional facial exfoliants.
The clear gel becomes a washing foam when you start lathering.
The skin is hydrated without any feeling of tightness.
REMOVE HAIR
Next, it’s time to say goodbye to unwanted hair and welcome smoother skin with shaving or waxing.
She recommends using a “good” shaving cream.
Her favorite is Albas Extremely Emollient Shaving Creamwhich sells for $4.99 on Vitacost.
“If you’re shaving, do it after a shower,” she said.
HYGIENE
After getting out of the shower or waxing, it’s time to sanitize again.
“I use pure witch hazel that still contains natural alcohol, or isopropyl alcohol on a cotton pad and wipe it over the area,” she said.
HYDRATE
Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, you’ll want to hydrate.
To make your skin smoother, she recommends incorporating Cerave Body Lotion with Salicylic Acid into your shaving routine.
“It hydrates and exfoliates in one step,” she said.
Some other tips include repeating the exfoliation process every time after shaving or waxing.
“Applying oils and lotions after shaving reduces friction and helps the hairs pass through the skin,” she said.
She’s also a fan of Bliss ingrown hair pads.
“Any method of killing germs and exfoliating will heal razor bumps, and daily maintenance will keep them at bay,” she said.
Another Redditor shared what works best for them.
“I can’t stress enough the magic of witch hazel for this. I also have the toner and a post-wax cream. Best combo yet,” she said.
