AN interior designer has revealed little-known tricks for creating a luxurious space on a budget.

She said homeowners don’t need to spend a “fortune” to create their dream space.

Melissa Denham is an interior design specialist at the UK-based company Hammonds built-in furniture.

Speaking to The US Sun, she shared several tips for renovating residential spaces.

BEAUTIFUL ROOM

Denham said the rooms are a “safe haven” that should be comfortable and luxurious.

She recommended updating the space, starting with making the bed properly.

“You can use decorative pillows and arrange them in descending order, starting with the sleeping pillows against the head of the bed and the smaller pillows in front,” she said.

“Fold a second sheet on top of the duvet for a premium hotel aesthetic, and finish with a soft folded throw to tie it all together.”

She said artwork and plants enhance the look of the room with textures and patterns.

“Elegant plants include hanging ivy, Chinese evergreen and peace lily,” she said.

“You can place them on nightstands, shelves, window sills, and even on the floor in corners to create a peaceful, green sanctuary.

“Striking pieces provide a focal point where you can build your room design.

“Professional designers use this technique to create impact in their work, and you can use it to discover how to create a luxurious bedroom.

“A statement piece can be anything from a bold, colorful piece of art to an elegant wardrobe slider.”

LARGE SPACES

Denham said larger rooms “naturally feel grander,” so it’s important to reduce clutter as much as possible.

“First of all, clutter can make any space feel smaller,” she said.

“In a small house or apartment, every inch of space is needed, so think about how to keep track of everything.

“Try to add clever storage ideas that are likely to work well in the space you have.

“To store your belongings out of sight, add shelves so your things don’t take up countertops and side tables.”

She advised taking a “minimalist” approach to decor while still being strategic about where you place furniture.

She said each element should have a purpose.

“Utility is one of the key drivers for maximizing space,” she said.

“In addition to choosing minimalist furniture, be sure to position it in a way that allows natural light to enter.

“Natural light can make a room feel larger, so move items like sofas and beds to ensure nothing blocks windows.

“Now that your windows are clean, you can think of other ways to introduce light into the room.

“Mirrors create the illusion of space and reflect light.

“Try hanging a large wall mirror in front of the window and you will see how the dimensions of the room appear larger.”

FABULOUS FURNITURE

Denham advised being wary of popular trends on apps like Pinterest as they typically go out of style.

“Ignoring trends can be difficult, and so it’s not about tuning out completely, but rather finding out which trends speak to you the most,” she said.

“If you see a trend and want to buy new items that fit with it, think first about whether you really like the aesthetic, whether it will match your pre-existing items or whether you will have to buy more items to match.

While you may save on the brand of paint, smart finishes can take your interior to the next level.

“And most importantly, will you still love this new item in a year when it won’t be as fashionable?”

She recommended buying furniture like curtains and cushions.

Also, ask yourself if the price matches the quality of the product.

“Consider recycling your old items, buying old jewelery from charity shops and online markets or going to street sales,” she said.

LUXURY LIVING ROOM

Denham warned that it is important not to forget even the smallest details when renovating a home.

“Often neglected finishes like baseboards and ceiling can make your home look unfinished,” she said.

“While you may save on the brand of paint, smart finishes can elevate your interior.”

She advised against saving on purchasing items such as beds and sofas.

She said it’s worth “splurging” on good quality and comfort.

“Typically, these big-ticket items are expensive, so many people may be tempted to look for cheaper alternatives to avoid spending a lot of money,” she said.

“However, the quality of the construction and materials used will determine how long your item will last, as they say – buy cheap, buy twice.”
