The former lawyer and military adventurer decided to quit his nine-to-five job in 2019 and began documenting his cruising life in YouTube.

Kevin decided to spend a year living on a cruise ship and broke down his monthly expenses to show how it can be more affordable than you might think.

During the month of March 2024 alone, he visited Saint Kitts, Saint Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, Grand Cayman and Aruba, among other places.

And during his cruise year, he spent time on MSC, NCL, Princess and Royal Caribbean cruises.

During the whole of March he spent a total of £1,615 and of this £1,080 was spent on accommodation and buffet dinners included on board.

Furthermore, he spent £85 on his phone, £42 on safe and £19 on healthcare.

Due to his veteran status, he was able to get credit to spend on the ship and was also savvy when it came to finding cruise deals that included extra perks.

Kevin added just £22 extra on meals outside of the package offered on board.

After his year was over, he said he would definitely do it again, but for a maximum of three months away.

He would also change the cruise ship he was traveling on for a change of scenery.

He shared: “About a month on a ship is the sweet spot, maybe a little longer – 45 days or six weeks or so.

“I plan to integrate cruises into my travel plans in the future… I hate flights. I loved my year on cruise ships.”

His favorite cruise was the Fire and Ice cruise which traveled from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Halifax Canada.

Meanwhile, he also recommended the Iceland cruises he took.

How much Kevin spent to live on a cruise ship

KEVIN spent £1,615 during the month living on the high seas.

The cost included:

  • Accommodation and meals included – £1,080
  • Extra food – £22
  • Telephone – £85
  • Insurance – £42
  • Health – £19

Kevin also had fun with some of the people he met on his cruise year.

He revealed: “I saw a guy at the buffet bringing shrimp – not fried shrimp, that peeled shrimp, frozen and you dip them in cocktail sauce.

“I saw a guy taking a handful of those shrimp and putting it in the pockets of his cargo shorts. Her pockets were full of shrimp, so he left the buffet. I thought it was hilarious.”

And although he is sometimes disturbed in his room by people passing by making noise after drinking, it doesn’t bother him most of the time.

One of her main tips for those who want to take a long-term cruise is to find a liner that makes washing clothes easy, preferably self-service, so it’s cheaper.

Kevin next The tip is to check cruise rewards programs to make sure you get perks that suit you, like discounted Wi-Fi and free drinks.

Cruise ship that is ‘cheaper than a mortgage’

VILLA Vie Residences is selling rooms on board for £82,000 – which is cheaper than some mortgages.

The dynamic housing development will depart from Southampton and travel around the world every three and a half years, docking in 420 ports in 147 countries across all seven continents.

Permanent cabins on the cruiser can be purchased immediately and prices start at £82,180 and go up to a staggering £205,120.

For those who are not confident about their sea journeys, there is also the option to pay as you go and join the trip in short sections – this costs £73 per day.

Guests aboard the flashy floating car will enjoy live entertainment, multiple dining options, multiple pools and a business center with “high-speed internet” where they can work from home.

There will also be a fitness center, golf simulator and cooking classes available to everyone on board the ship.

Additional monthly fees start at £1,441 per person to cover food, drink and onboard services such as 24/7 medical support, cleaning and fortnightly laundry service.
