Stewart said ants can be a “nuisance” especially in the warmer months, as that is when they are most active.

“Understanding their behavior and employing preventative measures is key to keeping them at bay,” he said.

“To prevent ant invasions, it is essential to eliminate potential entry points.

“Seal cracks, gaps and crevices in walls, windows and doors with silicone caulk or weather stripping to keep ants from getting in.”

ORGANIC REPELLENTS

Stewart revealed a selection of natural ingredients that can be used to deter ants.

“Spreading cinnamon, cayenne pepper or black pepper along ants’ trails and entry points can disrupt their scent trails and discourage them from entering your home,” he said.

“Additionally, spraying vinegar or lemon juice around windows, doors and other entry points can act as an ant barrier.”

He shared alternative solutions that are “effective” but should be kept out of reach of children and pets.

“Strategic placement of ant baits and traps can help control ant populations indoors,” he said.

“Place baits near ant trails and entry points, but away from children and pets.

Stewart said ants are less likely to be attracted to a “clean and tidy” environment.

“Regularly clean up food crumbs, spills and pet food residue as these can attract ants,” he said.

“Store food in airtight containers and dispose of trash immediately to eliminate ants’ food sources.”

He said ants are also attracted to moist areas, so it’s important to address any moisture issues.

“Fix leaky pipes, faucets and appliances and ensure adequate ventilation in bathrooms, kitchens and basements to reduce humidity levels,” he said.
