I was paid £520 to clean my curtains after they turned black with mold – but a 70p hack made them look like new

A money-savvy mum has revealed how she got her moldy curtains looking new after being paid an exorbitant sum.

The cleaning enthusiast known only as @laborofloverenetook to TikTok to share the hack that gave white curtains a new look without costing a fortune.

According to the home interiors fan from Australia, she was paid an astronomical AUD$1,000 – or a whopping £520 – to remove the grim mold from the transparent white material.

But instead of paying the huge amount of money, the savvy mom decided to take matters into her own hands and found a simple way to solve the problem.

The secret trick here, she demonstrated in a TikTok video, was to use a popular cleaning product you can buy in the store for less than a pound – regular household bleach.

Sharing the bargaining trick, the Australian wrote in the caption: “It worked!

”I diluted King white detergent in water at a ratio of 1:25 and left it to soak for 5 minutes, then I went back to washing and they looked like new.

She continued in the comments: ”The mold was only growing in the section of the curtain where the sliding door would have been left open while the previous owners slept, great for air flow but when it rained they were damp.

But despite the curtains now looking fabulous, not everyone agreed with their cleaning method – and some have even warned others to avoid hacks.

One social media user said: “Never mix mold with bleach, it’s toxic.”

Someone agreed, writing: “Bleach does not kill mold. It will come back worse.

”Ah girl, you just bleached the mold, you didn’t remove it. But for the effort”, a third party chimed in.

However, there were also many who thanked the cleaning fanatic, with one writing: ”Wow, what a good trick!!”

“I also use bleach,” wrote a second.

Meanwhile, others urged opting for other alternatives such as vinegar and clove oil.

Can vinegar fight mold? Expert reveals

Cleaning expert Laura Harnett, founder of eco-friendly cleaning tools Seep, said white vinegar is key to stopping mold from returning.

Speaking to the ExpressShe said: “Most people think bleach will remove mold, but it’s a harsh chemical to use in the home and doesn’t kill mold spores, so it will keep coming back, especially if condensation isn’t addressed.

“White vinegar has antifungal and antibacterial properties and removes mold in an environmentally friendly and cost-effective way.”

According to the professional, the acetic acid in white vinegar makes it ideal for eliminating mold, and cleaning fans want to buy one that contains five to six percent of the acid.

To remove stubborn mold, mix a tablespoon of white vinegar with a tablespoon of baking soda and a tablespoon of hot water – this should create a paste.

You can then use DIY mold killer to get rid of the unsightly stains and complete the process with a gentle scrub and cleanse of the area.
