WHEN getting into the shower, the last thing most of us expect to happen is for our nipple to be ripped off.
But that nightmare came true for 19-year-old Tilly Yeats after a misjudged step caused a chunk of flesh to be torn from her nipple.
The college student was getting ready in the bathroom in the “small” hallway when she spotted her nipple piercing on the shower door.
When she opened the door, she ripped out the piercing – taking a piece of flesh with it.
“Half of my nipple was falling out and the piercing was completely ripped out and hanging by a thread of skin,” says Tilly.
“I didn’t know what to do and I took my towel to compress the blood.
“I messaged a group chat asking someone to come to my bathroom and some girls from a different apartment came to mine.
“There was a lot of blood.
“I’m really good with blood, but I thought I was going to faint.”
Her friends had to cut off the piece of skin that was hanging from the piercing and plaster the nipple again.
Although the student, who lives in Exeter, wanted to carry on with her night after the shock, she continued to bleed and was told by 111 to go to A&E.
“My nipple was still bleeding and half broken,” Tilly recalls.
“I was in and out of the emergency room within an hour and I think that’s because I was still bleeding so much.
“When I was taking off the cast, I was really scared that my nipple was going to come out with it.
“The first nurse I saw had never seen this before and the other nurse had seen it once, and the girl needed surgery, so I was terrified.
“All the pieces of my nipple were still there – just not attached and loose – so no surgery was necessary.”

Fortunately, the nurse was able to sew the nipple back on.
“I was worried that my nipple would look messy, but that doesn’t happen,” adds Tilly.
“There is still a slight tear where the nipple pieces were reattached and you can see the lines where it tore.
“I feel absolutely fine now.
“I’m upset because I only have one nipple piercing, but it’s okay, I have a funny story to go with it.
“Sometimes it hurts, but I assume that’s normal because it’s still healing.”
Incredibly, the experience didn’t stop Tilly from making further modifications.
“It definitely didn’t stop me from getting piercings — it just made me more conscious when getting in and out of the shower,” she says.
“I had several people who were thinking about getting a piercing [say they] Not now, but what happened to me is quite rare and was completely my fault.
“They [the piercings] It gave me a lot of confidence and I wish I could do it again.
“I encourage anyone who wants to do this – just safely in a piercing shop.”
The student shared the story in a TikTok that garnered more than 90,000 views, calling it “the worst day of her life.”
