A GARDENING expert has revealed the best colors to paint your fence if you want to give the illusion of more space.
Light gray is one of the country’s favorite tones to paint your panels, and professional Fiona Jenkins revealed that it is one of the best to choose.
“Light gray softens and blurs the frame of your garden, making it appear much larger than it is,” she explained.
“Lighter colors, like gray, tend to reflect more light than dark colors, making them much brighter and more open, improving the perception of space.”
It’s also a good option if you have more “foliage-based plants rather than flowers throughout your garden” as “the contrast between the light tone of the fence draws the eye outward.”
“This makes the garden boundaries feel less restrictive and increases the feeling of space,” she added.
If you’re not a fan of gray, why not try light blue?
“Light blue is often associated with the sky on a clear summer day and by painting fences light blue you mimic the color of the sky, creating the color of a wide air space,” added Fiona.
“Additionally, the contrast of light blue with any vegetation makes the vegetation stand out more prominently, casting the eye upward and creating a sense of depth and openness in the garden.”
And if you’re lucky enough to have a south-facing garden, a soft pink might be the option for you.
“South-facing gardens offer beautiful sunshine all day and the soft tones of sunrise and sunset can make gardens with pink fences appear much larger,” MyWorkQuote said specialist Fiona.
“It can also evoke a sense of natural beauty, creating a serene environment that feels spacious and inviting.”
Sage green is a good option, especially if you have “a lot of green-edged plants.”
“Adding more greenery not only visually enlarges the landscape, but also makes the edges of the garden appear less visible, creating a feeling of expansion,” explained Fiona.
While neutral tones like beige and ivory can highlight colorful flowers, “the lack of visual distraction can make the garden appear larger.”
Garden features that add more value to a home

A well-kept garden can add between 5 to 20% to the value of a property.
Sellhousefast.uk carried out a study and consulted 36 estate agents, garden designers and property professionals from across the UK.
And experts revealed that the garden feature that most adds value to a property is the shed.
- Warehouse – 82%
- Patio or paving – 76%
- Secure fences, walls or gates – 72%
- Outdoor lighting – 66%
- Robust decks – 62%
- Water features, for example. fountain or pond – 58%
- Modern garden furniture – 54%
- Lawn/artificial grass – 40%
But there are also some tones that should be avoided.
“Fences with high contrast colors or that include intense patterns and intricate designs can overwhelm the visual space and make the garden appear smaller as they break the continuity of the garden space,” warned Fiona.
“Other restrictive colors include strong or vibrant warm tones such as orange, brown and yellow in shades of red, as these can make the area appear overly ‘busy’ and cluttered.”
