A NEW mother has revealed she regrets her daughter’s birth name and wants to change it, but the question is how.
She wasn’t sure whether she wanted to change the baby’s name under “customary law” or pay $500 to legally change it, which divided people’s opinions.
A mother under the username BabyWulf3 admitted that he didn’t like his daughter’s cool first name.
She anonymously posted in an online community for parents called What to Expect About Your Concerns.
ABSURD NAME
She explained that, at the time of her son’s birth, she was so excited that she couldn’t decide on a name because “the girl was born a month earlier than expected”.
As her husband was playfully “chasing” her in the hospital, she spontaneously chose the nickname Juniper.
“But now that she’s here and I ‘know’ her better, she’s not a Juniper/June,” she admitted.
The poster said she accidentally kept calling her Willow, which was the name the couple had previously agreed on but was hesitant to choose when the time came.
She also added that she loves her middle name, Elise, or the nickname Elsie as a first name.
These choices were much better than what was currently on her daughter’s birth certificate.
“Another reason I don’t mind her name as it is now is that her initials are currently JEW. I only thought about it after we left the hospital,” she said.
LEGAL LESSONS
The big problem is that because the family lives in California, a complete legal change of the daughter’s name costs $500 and requires multiple court appearances.
She decided to take her situation to the social community and ask if she should do a “customary law” name change and use a name other than her legal name.
“I know for any legal documents, she would still have to use Juniper as her first name since it was originally filled out on her birth certificate,” she added.
The worried mother added that she didn’t want to make things difficult for her children in the future.
GROSS REVENUES
Several parents offered honest opinions and encouraged her to change that.
“I personally would not advise calling her a completely separate name that is not included in or derived from her legal name. I can see problems arising throughout his life,” one commented.
“Would I change it legally or just keep it. I wouldn’t put Willow in there as her real name, but not real.”
“Personally, I would suck it up and change her name to Willow Elise. It’s much easier to do this now than in the future,” added another.
“If you don’t plan on naming her Juniper and you have a cute name you love, change it now while she’s still so young!”
“I would honestly save her the trouble later in life and change her name,” one woman added.
“For what it’s worth, I absolutely love Juniper, it’s in the top five and more unique than Willow, but it doesn’t really matter if you don’t think it’s the right name for her.”
