A TRAVELER has shared a list of things girls in her community are not allowed to do.
She revealed that women cannot drink until they get married and are prohibited from sleeping in the house of anyone who does not travel.
Zoey took to TikTok to share an insight into her life as an Irish Traveler.
She said, “Before we get married, we can’t drink and we can’t smoke.”
She added that although she is now married, she would never smoke.
“Jesus Christ, that’s so disgusting,” she said.
Another thing Zoey wasn’t allowed to do as a child was mingle with people outside of the traveling community.
“You can mingle with them at school, but outside of school it’s not allowed,” she said.
When Zoey was a child, she said she would never bother asking her parents if she could spend the night with someone who wasn’t a traveler because she knew the answer would be no.
“That would never happen in a million years,” she said.
Another cultural difference between travelers and non-travelers is that they leave school when they are very young.
Zoey explained that some travelers don’t even attend high school, while others drop out around age 13.
She said that she herself stopped attending school when she was around 13 or 14.
“What’s the point of going to school?” she said.
“Because being a traveler you will never get a job.”
Facts about Gypsy and Traveler communities
Typically, Gypsies is a term used to describe the Romani people, who migrated from India to Europe.
Meanwhile, Traveler refers to a group of people who generally have Irish, Scottish or English heritage.
It turns out that around 300,000 Romani and Irish Traveler gypsies live in the UK.
However, both groups come from nomadic lifestyles, and as it is increasingly difficult to find land to live on, many are moving into permanent housing.
They highly value family life and often live together even after they reach adulthood and get married.
Men are often the breadwinners of the family while women stay at home.
Although many English Gypsy girls are allowed to drink alcohol and go on vacation with friends before they get married, many Irish Traveler girls are not allowed to do this.
Zoey’s video, which was posted under the username @zoey_ponwent viral, racking up more than 312,000 views on the video-sharing platform.
TikTok users rushed to the video’s comments section to share their thoughts on her revelations.
One person said: “My best friend at primary school was a Traveler and we lost touch because she didn’t go to secondary school.
“She was an incredible friend.”
Someone else said: “That’s really interesting, I’d love to hear more.”
A third person said: “I dropped out of school at 14.”
A fourth added: “I know so many traveling girls with so many talents and skills.
“There is always someone who will hire you.”
