HAVING a unique name can make you stand out, for all the wrong reasons.

This is certainly true for a woman who revealed that she “hates” her name with all her being because she thinks she can’t do it.

Taking to Redditshe shared: “I have a unique name and I hate it with all my being

“My name is Ethereal. Yes, Ethereal.”

The woman said her name did not go down well at school and that she was cruelly made to feel bad by both teachers and classmates.

She continued, “Growing up teachers always laughed when they heard that and it made me feel self-conscious, so I used Ethy most of the time.

“When I was in high school, that was one of our vocabulary words and everyone laughed.”

The woman said she confronted her parents about why they gave her that name.

She shared, “I asked my parents why they gave me an adjective and my mom said she loves the meaning and pronunciation.

“Everyone in my personal and professional life calls me Ethy, and I’m thinking about changing that legally.

“Ethereal is awesome.

“I’m too introverted for that name.”

I named my baby after a wild dog – people openly torment me and the nurses at the hospital laughed, it really suits her

Many people supported her in her answers and reassured her about her name.

One wrote: “That’s an interesting name, although I’m sorry for your experience. Thanks for sharing, it’s a good reminder for me to control myself a little when looking for unique names for future children.

“I really like Ethy as a nickname.”

A second added: “It’s something I wanted to call my future child when I was sixteen.

Are unique baby names worth it?

The Fabulous deputy editor reveals the turmoil she faced with her own name growing up.

When I was a kid, all I wanted was one of those personalized keychains with my name on it.

But no joy, the closest I could find was Rosie, Joseph (not very good for a girl) and Joanne.

Josie is short for Josephine, which is a French name, and I managed to reach my 20s without ever meeting anyone who shared it.

When I try to introduce myself to people, I get all sorts of random things – like Tracey and Stacey – which can be really annoying.

Although I’ve come into contact with a few Josies over the past year – there seem to be a few of us around my age – it’s still a much rarer name than most of my friends.

Overall I don’t mind it, at least it’s not rude or poorly written.

And that means I can get away with ‘doing a Cheryl’ and just referring to myself as Josie.

I’m getting married this year and some friends are shocked that I’m changing my surname, as it’s not seen as very cool or feminist to do so these days, but I explain to them that I’m not as attached to Griffiths as I always said’ hi, it’s Josie’ when calling a friend.

I think it’s good to be unique and I will definitely try to replicate that when naming my own children.

It’s the rude names you have to watch out for, so after nine years as a lifestyle journalist, I’ll definitely avoid them.

“That and Blueberry. I’m sorry for you.

And a third commented: “Yes, it’s a shame the teachers laughed, but shame on them! That’s their problem!

“It may be difficult to be proud of your name right now if it has caused you a lot of stress, but let me ask…

“Would you rather have a generic, identifiable name like Laura?

“A name where all the other girls have the same name and therefore you all use your last initial, like Laura S and Laura A?”
