MOLD can build up if window treatments aren’t routinely cleaned and it only takes minimal effort to spruce them up, according to an expert.
She shared an essential guide to cleaning curtains and blinds quickly.
Yvonne Keal is a product manager at UK-based window company Hillarys.
In conversation with The US Sun, she shared tips on the best way to clean blinds and curtains.
PRISM CURTAINS
Keal said roller blinds can be “easily” incorporated into your regular vacuuming routine to remove dust and dirt.
“Alternatively, use a damp cloth for a deeper clean,” she said.
“Remember to leave the blind fully down to air dry before pulling it back up to prevent mold build-up.
“If mold appears due to condensation, a specialist fabric detergent can be used for effective removal.”
She revealed that wooden blinds require different cleaning methods and the “quickest” is to use a duster or microfiber cloth.
Walmart sells a duster with an extension handle for just $6.30, while a pack of microfiber cloths costs $6.58.
“To deeper clean your curtains, consider wiping each slat with a dry, lint-free cloth,” she said.
“The soft upholstery brush on your vacuum cleaner can also be used to prevent dust build-up.”
“Stubborn stains can be removed effectively with a damp cloth dipped in a diluted mixture of detergent and warm water, but care must be taken to avoid soaking the wood,” he added.
“Be sure to wipe off excess moisture with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel to prevent excess moisture.”
IMPECCABLE CURTAINS
Keal said the soft brush from vacuum cleaners can be used to spruce up curtains.
This is important because dust or pet hair can “build up” over time.
“And retained steam cleaners are a convenient tool to help straighten curtains by removing creases and wrinkles,” she said.
A highly rated multi-surface handheld steam cleaner is just $55.99 on Amazon.
It is suitable for cleaning bathrooms, kitchens and “difficult to access” spaces, as well as curtains.
Keal revealed that all hacks should be done using a specific movement to get brilliant results.
“For all of the above cleaning methods, you will get the best result moving from top to bottom,” she said.
“Pay special attention to the creases, edges and bottom of windows where dust is most likely to accumulate.”
