Camilla Lesser is an interiors specialist at Essential Lifea property developer based in London, England.

Speaking to The US Sun, she shared advice on how to renovate homes on the cheap.

FABULOUS FURNITURE

Lesser said that whimsical lighting is a “perfect” addition to rooms and an “affordable” way to make homes look expensive and elegant.

She recommends setting the atmosphere with wall sconces, lamps, and mood lighting rather than one big light.

“Another trick for making your home look expensive is to carefully choose furniture that has personality,” she said.

“Decorating with wooden pieces can add texture to your home and make it look sophisticated.

“Plus, opting for statement pieces like a large headboard or large artwork for your walls can add even more sophistication.”

She said local charity shops and markets are ideal places to find artwork for a bargain.

BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS

Lesser praised that “nothing transforms spaces” like a flower arrangement, as they make the home feel “fresh, colorful and inviting.”

“Tulips and dandelions are particularly popular flowers in spring as they are beautiful, vibrant and can make a dark room seem brighter,” she said.

“Flowers help elevate your room, but if you’re worried about having to continually replace flowers, you can opt for some realistic silk flowers that you won’t need to replace.”

SMART COLORS

Lesser said opting for a neutral color scheme is another way to renovate homes.

However, there is one bold color that should be incorporated into the design.

“No matter the style of your interior, be sure to add a touch of black to create that sleek, modern feel,” she said.

PERFECT ACCESSORY

Lesser revealed that an easily overlooked accessory can have an impact on the overall look of the home.

“A rug says a lot about a home, so be strategic when placing it and try not to overdo it,” she said.

“Furniture should sit on the rug, not around it, and opting for one that is wider than a sofa or bed can look beautiful.

“The bigger the rug, the more expensive the house looks.”

How can you make a house feel more spacious?

Camilla Lesser recommended bringing in more natural light to make the space feel larger.

“You can do this by moving any blockers in front of the windows, be it a cabinet or mirror,” she said.

“During the day, also make sure to open the curtains as much as possible, as this will let in more light.”

She said mirrors can be strategically placed to reflect sunlight around the space, such as in front of the door through which you enter the room.

The interiors expert revealed that organization can also have a huge impact when trying to create the illusion of having more space.

“Start by identifying specific areas or rooms that need immediate attention and classify items into different categories,” she said.

“For common spaces like the living room, remove any items that don’t belong there and then clean up a bit.

“Dust and clean surfaces to brighten your space, wash linens, and remove any trash you no longer need.”

SIMPLE STYLE

Lesser warned that it’s important to be aware of how each feature you choose will contribute to the overall aesthetic of the home.

From the wall colors to the accessories, she said they should complement each other.

“Be sure to add a pop of color rather than an overload of color,” she said.

“Unless you’re aiming to have a really bright and lively room, be careful not to mix and match too many colors, as this can make the space feel crowded and overwhelming.”
