I announced my big engagement at my half-sister’s funeral – the timing couldn’t have been more perfect

A MAN has been brutally criticized for announcing his big engagement at his half-sister’s funeral after she unexpectedly passed away.

The 19-year-old explained how he decided to ask his 20-year-old girlfriend to marry him, shortly before the death of his 14-year-old half-sister.

Although he wanted to share the wonderful news immediately, the 19-year-old, who lives in a different state than his family, kept it quiet until everyone processed his loss.

He wrote in a post on Reddit, saying it “didn’t feel right to announce” the engagement and that he wanted to give his family and loved ones “the space to grieve.”

He continued: “A few weeks later, my girlfriend and I flew to California for the funeral.

”My entire family was there, which is unusual considering we all live in different states and countries.

“It was basically a family reunion and if this had happened under any other circumstances, this would have been the perfect time to announce our engagement, but it just didn’t feel right because everyone was so disheartened.”

After a “depressing” service, young Romeo insisted that the atmosphere began to improve when they arrived at the wake.

Imagining that since “everyone seemed happy”, it was the perfect opportunity to inform the family and other guests about the big event.

With that, he made a toast and announced his engagement to his girlfriend, reported the mirror.

However, to his surprise, instead of receiving applause and congratulations from everyone, the room suddenly fell silent.

He said: “A few minutes later, my stepsister’s older half-sister’s boyfriend asked to speak to me outside.

“We left and I was confronted by my stepsister’s older half-sister, who was crying hysterically and told me that I always do everything for myself and asked me why I couldn’t just let this one day be about someone else. ”

According to him, the relative and her boyfriend then demanded that the loving duo leave and not return – and others echoed the sentiment.

”I asked my mother and stepfather if I should leave and they coldly told me to go.”

Since then, the 19-year-old has received numerous text messages from friends and family “chastising” him for “having a funeral just for him” – and several even said they wouldn’t be attending his wedding.

Some advice: if you get divorced, try not to announce it at a gender reveal or something.

Completely baffled by the reaction to the ill-timed announcement, the young man took to social media to ask other Redditors what he did wrong.

In response, one person said: “Holy shit, why do you think this would be a good idea?”

A second chimed in: “I could see someone thinking this might be a good idea for half a second… but it definitely isn’t.

“And the fact that your family immediately said that you always make things about yourself leads me to believe that this has probably been a recurring problem.”

Another person wrote: “Some advice: if you get divorced, try not to announce it at a gender reveal or something.”
