A HOMEOWNER has gone viral with the DIY fence she erected to get around her homeowners association’s strict restrictions.
Shaye Miko (@shannonmik0) shared the at-home solution in a TikTok video, which has since racked up more than 4.9 million views.
In a follow-up clip, she detailed how she built the temporary privacy screen that covers her patio and inflatable pool.
Miko told The US Sun that she needed to get creative because her HOA doesn’t allow permanent fences.
“I own a condominium and could not put up a permanent fence as part of our HOA rules. Our back yards have very limited privacy, so I was looking for a temporary privacy solution to fit our needs,” she explained.
“I needed a fence that could go on top of the concrete patio, but I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for, so I created this DIY and it’s perfect!”
The home’s transformation cost her about $290, which she spent on supplies from Lowe’s and Menards.
She purchased six outdoor privacy screens for $30 each, two cedar boards for $15, 25 pavers for $1.24 and 10 corner braces for $4.71.
Other materials needed included washers and wood screws that she already had on hand.
“The goal of my setup here was to keep everything temporary. If you live in a condo and have an HOA, trust me, you understand,” she said.
“These are temporary privacy fence panels from Lowe’s; they sell them in packages.”
She explained that the fence had no problems and was easy to dismantle.
“It’s worked really well so far! I’ve had it for almost a month and I love it,” she told The US Sun.
“When autumn comes, I can store it until next year as it is very easy to disassemble.”
The TikToker added that she appreciated the overwhelming support from fans.
“The response on TikTok has been incredible!” she said.
“I created a short video showing my patio with the temporary fence, and everyone wanted to know where it was from and how I did it; That’s when I made the DIY video showing the process.”
Viewers supported her affordable DIY, with fans calling the idea “brilliant.”
“I work for an HOA and I say GO FOR IT!” wrote one commenter.
“I love knowing the rules, because when I break them, I’m breaking them with no room for discussion. Good job!” said another.
“YES, I will follow your “rules” in my own way haha”, Miko replied.
A third called the hack “absolute brilliance,” saying, “I’m stealing this idea.”
“Thank you, thank you, thank you. I live in an HOA too and have been using those metal fences for puppy playpens, but this looks really nice! I’ll steal it!” someone added.
