A DIY fan turned his old fence into an ivy leaf trellis for £13.99 to stop neighbors peeping into his patio.

Jack, who works in marketing, was able to use some super clever money-saving tricks when it came to filling in the privacy screen on his fence.

And many people “couldn’t believe” how cheap it was, and some paid “double” for their own privacy fence.

The homeowner started with an old, dated fence that had gaps that prevented them from having much privacy on their patio.

Jack, 32, decided he wanted to create an ivy trellis that would look good on the eyes and also give him some privacy while he relaxes in his garden.

He started by putting masking tape around the fence to protect certain areas of paint.

He then gave the fence a fresh coat of black paint, called Wickes’ Cuprinol 5 Year Ducksback.

The paint, which cost him £9 in the £15 sale, was enough to cover the entire fence from top to bottom and then dried.

Jack, from Worcestershire, removed the tape before fitting a privacy screen – including cables and clamps – which he bought on eBay for £4.99.

Since this work was completed, the fence has survived wind and rain.

Jack, who regularly posts about his DIY projects on his TikTok page @homeno7, says: “It’s going strong so far. We had all four seasons this summer.”

He adds: “We wanted to do it so that our neighbours’ windows faced the courtyard next to and in front of the property.

“I’m now thinking about creating a privacy fence in other areas of my garden as I’m really pleased with the result.

Jack also revealed how the fence now has a secret dual use.

He says: “It makes a great photo wall too when you have friends over.”

Jack revealed that many other DIY fans are big fans of his creation.

Inexpensive Gardening Tips

  • Keep weeds away with straw
According to horticulturists and plant professionals, all-natural mulch is one of the most effective tools to take to your garden.
You don’t need to buy a whole bale – you can usually buy smaller packages from your local farm shop for no more than £1.50.
Some stores even sell pre-portioned bags made for gardens, which can cost around £10 but can be found on the shelves or online.
  • Call your local garden center
If you’re not sure how to care for your plants, call or online and contact your local garden center rather than turning to the Internet.
Nursery staff will have an up-to-date understanding of conditions in your area and any plant care tips unique to your climate and soil.
Calling them with a question or stopping by is completely acceptable – they want your plants to thrive too.
  • Wood to keep slugs away
Use a piece of wood to keep slugs out of your garden.
Experts say they will crawl under it looking for shade.
Then you can gather them and get rid of them.
  • Put away your toilet paper tubes.
You can use paper towel tubes and toilet paper tubes in your garden, as per tip from Family handyman.
Save the tubes and cut them into two-inch pieces before placing them in a waterproof tray.
Then simply fill the tubes with potting soil and start planting the seeds.
According to the website, when you’re ready to move them into the garden, they can be planted directly into the tubes and, because they’re cardboard, they will decompose organically.

He says: “People can’t believe it all came to £14 as most paid more than double.”

Jack, who currently has 13.9 thousand TikToks followers, got more than 12 thousand views on his video.

Some have managed to purchase a similar privacy screen from B&M.
