A COUPLE has sparked fury over their “money grab” wedding invitation, which critics say they would turn down outright.

According to one of the friends invited to the big day, she received the invitation via text message – and things got progressively worse as the woman started reading the content.

“The fall black-tie event is an adults-only reception, there will be an open bar with batch drinks for ‘him and her’ and selection of beer and wine,” the message read.

Committed to keeping costs as low as possible, the loved-up duo also revealed that guests shouldn’t expect food other than a few bites.

However, to avoid feeling hungry, the couple encouraged those present to eat in advance, as there were several restaurants in the neighborhood.

”We will only be offering light snacks, which will give you and your guest the perfect opportunity to have an elegant dinner in our beautiful city center with endless options before attending the wedding.”

When writing the invitation, the bride and groom also added a note requesting black formal attire and asked friends and family to give money instead of spending it on gifts.

The couple wrote: “We plan to celebrate our love with an incredible honeymoon adventure and your monetary contribution would mean everything.

”We humbly request cash/card to our card box or scan the QR code provided at reception.”

The text continued: ”We hope you can join us for our special evening and help make monumental memories.”

The guests, from the US, were excused from attending the ceremony which required formal attire and limited drinks – without offering any real food.

Sharing a screenshot on Reddit, the recipient said: “We don’t want to buy a tuxedo to eat fancy Doritos.”

The wedding invite sparked fury as other social media platforms flocked to the comments to share their thoughts.

“Calling something black tie and not feeding the guests is not… black tie, it’s rude to say the least,” one person wrote.

Someone chimed in: ”Come and you have to dress super fancy so our photos look better and don’t forget to eat before and definitely give us money for the honeymoon – instead of text!

”Tacky, cheesy, cheesy.”

Redditors also criticized the bride and groom for what they considered to be simply a way to make money.

When is it tacky to ask for money for your wedding – and how can I ask without offending people?

By Josie Griffiths, Fabulous deputy digital editor and bride-to-be

Josie Griffiths said: “As someone who lives in an already cluttered 38 square meter flat, gifts aren’t exactly top of the list for our wedding day in August.

“All we want is money for our honeymoon – and we are already expecting a reaction from the older generations, but what can we do?

“I would love an air fryer or a coffee machine for the kitchen, but we just don’t have the space.

“I think there are some secrets when asking for money to avoid it looking tacky – which this bride got really wrong.

“First – the money is for our honeymoon, not to cover the cost of the wedding, we are paying for it ourselves.

“Two — like any gift, it’s completely optional, and people can decide what they’re comfortable spending on. When I went to a wedding abroad in my early 20s, I didn’t contribute to the honeymoon fund and I still feel comfortable with my decision, the trip to Spain has already cost me and my partner a lot.

“Under no circumstances should you bill people a specific amount. You may have relatives who are more generous than expected, which would be great, but your guests are just that and shouldn’t have to pay for the food, decorations, and entertainment you’ve chosen.

“Three – make it feel like a registry – there are some great websites where guests can donate money for cocktails, room upgrades and overseas experiences, which makes it feel a lot more personal than a bank account number and code rating. People like to know where their money is going and then you can send appropriate thanks with photos of you enjoying whatever they paid for.

“As for how to ask, some people make poems but personally I hate them, they seem childish and you wouldn’t get one pregnant to ask your partner to transfer £100 to you on your trip, so it seems strange here.

“Something like this, on your formal invitation or wedding website, would be perfect: The most important thing to us is that you can celebrate with us on our wedding day. However, if you would like to give a gift, we would be grateful to accept a small contribution to our honeymoon.

“Good luck!”

“This is the rudest way to get money for a wedding that doesn’t even care enough to send out invitations,” one woman was shocked.

“They care about the photos (and probably the gifts), not the guests,” another person agreed.

After reading the brutal invitation, many noted that they would simply refuse to attend the wedding.

One of them laughed: ”RSVP: refuse, I can drink beer in my evening dress at home without these people present.”

However, there were also some who couldn’t understand why the majority seemed so disheartened.

One netizen wrote: ”Eh, I don’t see anything too terrible here, there is no dress code (other than smart clothes), there is an open bar and snacks, and they are not after gifts, it seems kind of chill to me.

“I honestly don’t care if people buy cheap as long as they’re upfront about it,” one woman agreed.
