Unfortunately, bathrooms create the perfect environment for mold to grow as a result of high humidity.

But instead of bringing in bleach, it turns out that houseplants can do the trick — yes, you heard that correctly.

According to Sanctuary bathroomssupplier of luxury bathrooms, spider plants are the ideal addition to preventing mold growth.

Quite tolerant to temperature changes, so taking a hot shower would not bother the plant. Spider plants also thrive in low light.

These air-purifying plants remove toxins and harmful pollutants and, even better, they are “virtually impossible to kill.”

It is for this reason that the spider plant is considered the “perfect, low-maintenance bathroom plant.”

If you want to get your hands on a spider plant, you can buy it for just £11.99 from B&Q.

However, other anti-mold plants include ferns, bamboo, peace lilies, aloe VeraEnglish ivy and snake plants.

I’m a gardening guru and there are five houseplants that can banish mold from your home

So if you’re looking for a plant that’s super cheap and affordable, you’ll be pleased to know that you can buy an aloe vera plant for just £5 in many Sainsbury’s stores.

Aloe vera is an excellent air purifier and, as a result, can help reduce the growth of mold and mildew.

Common bathroom habits that increase mold

Leading bathroom and kitchen product specialist Plumbworld has shared the daily habits that increase the chance of mold growth in homes.

Leaving wet towels and rugs on the floor

Wet towels and bath mats on the floor after a shower can increase humidity levels, which provides a perfect breeding ground for mold spores.

To avoid this, hang towels and bath mats in a place where they can dry quickly and wash them regularly.

Do not turn on the fan

An exhaust fan is essential for reducing humidity levels in the bathroom.

When you take a hot shower, the steam increases the humidity level in the room, creating an ideal environment for mold to grow on walls, ceilings and other surfaces.

An exhaust fan helps move moist air outside, significantly reducing the risk of mold growth.

Experts suggest running the fan while showering and for at least 20 to 30 minutes afterward to reduce humidity levels.

Ignoring small leaks

Even small leaks from the sink, toilet or shower can contribute to increased humidity levels in the bathroom, promoting an environment where mold can grow.

Over time, these leaks can cause significant water damage, promoting mold growth in less visible areas, such as inside walls or under flooring.

Fix leaks immediately to prevent mold and possible structural damage.

Keep shower curtains or doors closed

Keeping the shower area closed after use traps moisture inside, delaying the drying process and creating a humid environment conducive to mold growth.

Mold can easily grow on shower curtains, doors, and tile grout if they remain wet for a long time.

To avoid this, leave the shower door or curtain open after use to improve air circulation and allow the area to dry more quickly.

Store many products

Shower enclosures and corners filled with bottles and accessories may seem harmless, but they can obstruct airflow and trap moisture and create hidden, damp niches where mold can grow unnoticed.

Keep shampoo and shower gel bottles to a minimum, and regularly clean and dry the areas beneath them to prevent mold growth.

While these plants alone cannot remove mold growth, they can help reduce humidity levels and keep mold spores at bay.

James Roberts, Director of Sanctuary Bathrooms explained: “When selecting the ideal floor plan for your bathroom, assessing the space is essential.

“Bathrooms with little natural light, such as suites, powder rooms or dressing rooms, require plants that thrive in low light conditions.

“On the other hand, larger bathrooms, typically found in homes with multiple residents, such as a family bathroom, benefit from plants that require more light.”

James added: “In smaller bathrooms, or when looking to spruce up shelves or vanities, opting for smaller potted plants can add a touch of greenery without overwhelming limited space.

“By carefully evaluating your bathroom’s lighting, size, and humidity levels, you can select the perfect plant to enhance the ambience of your space.”
