Last month, M&S fans were left devastated after the supermarket chain discontinued an iconic treat.

The popular Colin the Caterpillar in a Jar recently disappeared from store shelves.

An eagle-eyed fan noticed Colin the Caterpillar in a Jar cake missing from M&S stores.

She raised the issue with the company on X, formerly Twitter.

The post read: “Hi M&S, have you discontinued Colin cakes in a jar?”

The company’s account responded, saying: “Hi Emily, it looks like these have been discontinued unfortunately. I’ve let our food team know you’d like to see them back in stock!”

The cake pots hit supermarket shelves in 2021, with fans hailing them as “a little pot of joy”.

The treat consisted of layers of chocolate sponge cake, Belgian chocolate sauce and chocolate ganache topped with a mini white chocolate Colin’s face in a practical packaging.

Each bottle sold for £4, which divided opinion among buyers at the time.

But it’s not all doom and gloom as M&S has launched a huge range of new products.

A spokesperson said: “We are constantly reviewing, updating and improving our ranges across the Foodhall and launched 1,250 new products last year as well as updating 1,000 products.

“This year we are launching 1,400 new products and updating another 1,000 products.”

Cake in a jar fans may be delighted as M&S has launched a new alternative – and it also comes in a jar.

Colin the Caterpillar chocolate mousse has arrived in supermarkets and offers a similar chocolatey delight.

The sweet treat comes with a layer of rich chocolate sauce on the bottom, topped with fluffy chocolate mousse.

The dessert is also decorated with a white chocolate Colin face and chewy brownie pieces.

Colin the Caterpillar vs Cuthbert the Caterpillar

MARKS & Spencer has called a truce with Aldi over its Colin the Caterpillar cake.

The posh supermarket and discount chain was locked in a legal battle after Aldi started selling a cake called Cuthbert the Caterpillar, which looked similar to the M&S creation.

They reached a confidential out-of-court settlement on November 5, it has now emerged.

The companies did not disclose the terms of the deal – but both cakes will still be sold.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “Cuthbert is free and looking forward to seeing all his fans again soon!”

An M&S spokesperson said: “The aim of the claim was to protect the intellectual property of our Colin the Caterpillar cake and we are delighted with the outcome.”

The high street retailer started selling the famous Colin cake more than 30 years ago and its design has remained largely unchanged since 2004.

The only exception is during seasonal events such as Halloween, Christmas and Easter when M&S releases new temporary designs.

Colin is made from chocolate sponge and buttercream, covered in a chocolate shell and costs £7.

Aldi launched its copycat Cuthbert cake in 2019 for £4.99.

Most supermarkets now have their own version, including Waitrose’s Cecil, Charlie at the Co-op and Tesco’s Curly cake.

Colin the Caterpillar chocolate mousse is scanning cash registers for just £2.

Some buyers have already tried the delicacy, praising it as “first class”.

One person wrote on Instagram: “There’s just one problem with this… there’s not enough of it!

“Please M&S, make a big shared version of this.”

Another added: “It really is a mousse that looks cracked.”
