Living in a caravan in your parents’ garden is a great way to save money to buy a house, whilst maintaining your independence.

As the cost of living crisis continues to grow, more and more adults are fighting to climb the housing ladder and are choosing to live in the family home for longer.

The 2021 census revealed that more than half of people aged 23 and under still live with their parents.

The average house price in the UK was £285,000 in March 2023, and this rises to a staggering £735,254, which is completely unaffordable for many.

Tiny House FAQs

The tiny house movement started in the US before gaining popularity in the UK.

What is a tiny house?

Tiny homes are small, fully equipped spaces designed to lead a more sustainable, off-grid lifestyle. Although they vary in size and shape, tiny houses tend to be between 15 and 50 square meters in capacity, are made from sustainable materials, and are easier – and cheaper – to maintain than traditional brick homes.

Are tiny houses legal in UK?

As long as the tiny house does not exceed 19.8m x 6.7m in size, it is defined as a caravan in UK law. Therefore, tiny homes are classified as legal additional living space.

Can you get a mortgage for a tiny house?

The small size and relatively low cost of tiny homes means they are generally not considered eligible for a mortgage. However, there are many options for taking out a loan to finance your dreams of a perfect mobile home.

Additionally, research by the Resolution Foundation found that the average first-time buyer deposit has tripled, rising from 5% of the property price in 1989 to 15% in 2019.

This means buyers need to save for much longer and use a higher percentage of their earnings to move up the real estate ladder.

A recent survey by property website Zoopla found that 42% of adults under 40 who don’t already own a home have given up, due to the astronomical cost of buying a property.
