As the weather finally warms up, it can be tempting to bring some of that joy into our homes.
The right summer decor can transform our spaces into peaceful retreats, while the wrong choices can leave us feeling down.
But before you start spending money, an interior designer has warned about a big mistake people make when decorating their homes during the summer – and one you should avoid at all costs.
Zara O’Hare, interior designer at Land of Carpetssaid: “With the right colors we can make our homes feel like a breath of fresh air, but it’s also easy to get it wrong.”
According to the professional, the biggest mistake people can make when decorating their homes for summer is opting for dark colors.
“Everyone has their decor preferences,” she said, “but darker colors are better suited for winter and should be avoided like the plague in summer decor.”
So what’s the deal with dark tones?
These colors can feel too heavy in a home, especially during the summer months, while lighter tones create a bright, airy atmosphere.
“For example, dark green might look a little Christmassy, while dark orange might look a little Christmassy,” Zara explained. “They should be avoided during the summer.”
“Use lighter, airier colors and fabrics that will create a fresh, bright feel in your home,” suggested Zara.
“And I’m not just talking about wall colors. Swap heavy throws for lighter linens during the summer, and replace throw pillows with softer, more neutral colors like soft yellow, blue, and cream.”
These tones feel more summery, as they evoke the sun, clear skies, the ocean and the beach,” explained Zara.
Zara also warned against overusing one color scheme.
“Opting for cream walls, a cream sofa, cream chairs, a cream rug and a cream throw can feel a little neutral and boring,” she said.
“It’s important to add some complementary tones to transform your space from drab to elegant.”
“For example, if your main tone is cream, adding some green and gold accents gives a more luxurious vibe.”
Trends that interior designers hate
IF you want to ensure your home looks glamorous, here are the trends interior designers can’t stand.
NOT YELLOW: According to Bilal Rehman, painting yellow in a room is a big no-no.
He said: “If you want everyone to know that you are a horse girl, then yellow is perfect for you.”
SIGN OFF: Kelly Hoppen shared her honest thoughts on the Live, Love, Laugh signs.
The interiors professional explained: “Another complaint of mine – Live, Laugh, Love – those kinds of wooden things that go on bookshelves and floating shelves, that was 10, 12, 15 years ago.”
DON’T GRAY YAY: Julie Provenzano explained that the gray interiors were overdone.
She emphasized, “We took a good thing and exaggerated it to the point that now it feels like copy, paste, basic.”
