The 26-year-old was scrolling through the Explore page on her Instagram late one night in December when she came across 24-year-old Pitiuruk’s profile.

She decided to send a message to the Ecuadorian indigenous man wanting to know more about his culture and way of life living in Amazon forest.

I couldn’t believe that someone from the Amazon jungle, on this exotic piece of land, simply responded to me

“I was scrolling the night before bed and came across a gorgeous man who was posting amazing content in a country I knew nothing about,” Jordan said. News.com.au.

“I was very intrigued by how people still live this lifestyle, and to some extent I knew there were tribes in the Amazon, but I never took the time to learn about it.

“I clicked on his page and just sent him a message.”

Jordan revealed that she’s a big believer in taking risks – and this one clearly paid off.

“You never know, you might end up finding magic you never knew existed,” she said.

“It turns out that mine is on the other side of the world, in a country I’ve never heard of and don’t speak the language of.”

That night, she sent Pitiuruk a message, talking about how ‘handsome’ he was and asked him to teach her about his culture.

“I wasn’t expecting an answer, to be completely honest,” she said.

And when he did that, she was stunned.

“I couldn’t believe that someone from the Amazon jungle, on this exotic piece of land, just responded to me,” she explained.

“For a girl who lives a Western life in coastal Queensland, who is always going to the beach, who lives in a house, talking to someone from the Amazon who lives in a cabin was so surreal.”

Pitiuruk’s family is located in the province of Pastaza, canton of Puyo, Amazonia, Ecuador, where they offer guided tours as a way to educate others about their ancestral culture.

Facts about long distance relationships

eHarmony shared the pros and cons of a long-distance relationship.

Benefits of a long-distance relationship:

  • They force you to learn to be patient and confident
  • They give you space for the rest of your life
  • They let you appreciate your time together
  • They are an excuse to travel
  • They encourage you to look at your relationship with clear eyes

Common problems in long-distance relationships:

  • The cost
  • The lack of physical intimacy
  • Jealousy and insecurity
  • The communication gap

The pair soon began video calling most days, discussing how different their lifestyles were.

Jordan said: “Our conversations were mainly about our way of life, what we do during the day, what we eat, where we sleep and simply how we live,” Jordan said. “I would show him my room, the fact that we had a bathroom, and my front and back yard — just the little things.”

“And he was telling me about a day in his life living in the Amazon, which is quite unique.”

After four months of chatting online, Jordan decided to travel and wanted to meet Pitiuruk in person.

She decided to quit her job to travel to Peru, Argentina and Brazil, and asked if it was also possible to visit him.

“I just told him, ‘Actually, I can come and meet you. Call me crazy, but we can do this,’” Jordan added.

Without hesitation, Pitiuruk agreed to the idea and worked with his family to plan an itinerary for Jordan.

After four flights and more than 30 hours of travel, she finally arrived in Guayusa Runa (name of Pitiuruk’s family home).

“As the plane landed in Quito, I realized the magnitude of the situation – I had acted on a whim with a ‘why not’ attitude and was about to meet someone I had never met in real life.”

But after they got together, Jordan said he never felt more comfortable and that the connection was instant, even though they didn’t speak the same language.

“I just couldn’t believe he was real,” she said. “It was my first time in Ecuador and I just wanted to make sure I was really respectful, but I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.”

O next spent two weeks living and learning the Pitiuruk way of life, and although the two aren’t fluent in each other’s languages, Jordan said much of their connection is based on body language.

“If the spark is there, it doesn’t matter if you don’t speak each other’s language. I have never had such a connection with someone where I know exactly where I am.

“When I arrived, Pitiuruk had worked with his family to plan a two-week itinerary for me through the capital and then his home region (Pastaza).”

Jordan said Pitiuruk’s family welcomed her with open arms: ‘Our jungle is your jungle,’ they told me.”

She explained that in order for Pitiuruk’s family to maintain their history and educate people about their way of life, they have to embrace tourism.

“And the best way to do this is through social media platforms and establishing an online presence. They had to integrate to understand how to use the internet and create a website to support the way they live.

“But they don’t want to change anything about the way they live – they are happy the way they are.”

During their stay, the couple’s romance grew: “Honestly, I had no idea what my vacation would be like, but all I can say is that it was cinematic,” she said.

“Everything was as magical as you can imagine. It was better than my daydream.

But Jordan had to return to Australia and shared their love story on social media, where it went viral with 6 million views.

Their story attracted so much attention that Flight Center funded Jordan’s flight back to Ecuador to see Pitiuruk again.

“We were both crying because we hadn’t expected to see each other for about a year,” she explained.

The two agreed that they would regret not trying to see things through and although Jordan has yet to decide on a return date, she is struggling to get her affairs in order as this time she hopes to stay for a few months.
