Top 30 qualities singles look for in a partner revealed – from animal lovers to being a good driver

The attributes at the top of the list for British boyfriends are emotional intelligence, financial stability and relationships with friends.

A survey of 2,000 adults who are falling in love found that they would like to see someone who could stimulate them intellectually (19 percent) and who had a good sense of style (15 percent).

Almost eight in 10 (79 percent) want a potential partner to have qualities they themselves do not possess, in a bid to make the relationship more fulfilling.

The research was commissioned by Lux dating site Searching.comlooking at the emergence of a new dating trend she calls “modern hypergamy.”

Emma Hathorn, a spokeswoman for the luxury dating site, said: “Traditional hypergamy consisted of marrying for financial or social gain.

“Modern hypergamy, however, involves much more. Reflects a shift towards valuing growth and sharing benefits in relationships.”

The study found that 73 percent of respondents believe a “modern Hypergamous approach” to dating can contribute to personal growth and discovery.

More than half (57 percent) intentionally sought out a partner who possessed characteristics or values ​​that complement their own.

And when a potential partner doesn’t meet all the requirements, 43 percent are now more open-minded, compared to 23 percent who are disappointed.

While 55 percent were surprised to date someone who wasn’t their usual “type.”

When it comes to common attributes that daters believe they bring to the table, being a good cook (36%) tops the list.

One in three are “active listeners” and want to know how their partner’s day was, while 19% think they have a strong sense of style.

With previous partners, 31 percent of respondents were in conflict always or often, with different communication styles being the most common reason.

Although 29 percent had contradictory values ​​and beliefs, 23 percent had different attitudes toward financial management or expenses, and 20 percent had different aspirations in terms of lifestyle or social status.

Of those who have changed their minds about what they are looking for, 43% believe they simply know themselves better now.

For 31 percent, they opened themselves up to new possibilities and found happiness simply by moving forward.

While 27 percent were introduced to new things and had their lives enriched in ways they “didn’t think possible”.
